i need a way to mount a desktop computer case with all the bells and whistles i will be using solid state hard drives i am aware of the options to have it in a sling i want something more secure and stabilized mounting an LCD is not an issue nor is a wireless keyboard and mouse even for gaming as the rv is a Faraday cage and with park wifi or wimax i am expecting latency of 150 ms up to 200 an extra 2 ms from my mouse and keyboard i do not care but i do not want the computer to suffer from the road and no laptop its just not an option even with an lcd screen i will be demanding to much performance for to long and burn it out

looks like these guys claim to have the skill and custom hardware to make this work

i will be working with my dealer to get this rv custom fitted but it seems this is not something that is very common it can be done i know dhs has done it but they spend 5 grand on a computer case that is our tax dollars at work i am sure an easier way exists such as shock isolating the computer case having a good flooring system will reduce allot of the smaller jolts and vibrations but a pothole is still gonna be be an issue

its custom from the ground up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sOXUQiiJAM that is what a paint job can do and we are going for special underpayment to reduce road noise so its the big shocks i am worried about the small vibrations will not even be noticeable i got most everything else worked out just this computer needing a shock isolation system i think my best bet is a floor mounted system that is both using springs and is padded unless i can get the performence i want from video cards that not so big normaly my cards tend to have about a half of pound of heat sink on them still enough to be of some worry a body in motion tends to stay in motion so we have to make this transition slower a shuttle interesting concept i might consider as it has the video card facing up were shock of a bump just pushes the card into the mother board rather then a lateral stress on the socket my dvr will likely be a horizontal case due to a number of factors but this will also have the same advantage my main computer will be a more confined area being i plan to sit right in front of it vs back min of 8 feet from the tv on a cross bar luv seat so the dvr being in a cabinet with a dvd player and maybe even a satellite receiver is not a big issue inside an RV not much side to side movement or back and forth movement just the up and down movement of a pothole or even a dirt road but mostly its the chance of a pothole that has me worried i do not think a dirt road is something i will feel much i might feel half of it due to the underpayment and advanced paint job we will be getting

even while on the road i might play signal player games or work on a script for short films we plan to do or try to load my email if i got 4g access near a city likely not gonna be able play any games but i could likely load my email before i switch towers then have to log in again i will have a top notch router that will be able to connect very quickly once the g4 wimax device connects as well as having allot of caching abilities heck i might be able to watch youtube clips while on the road near a city for the last hour and first hour of every trip i do not need to have the best of the best just need to be able run with high settings and not have screen jitters

well not talking about a supper video card more like a 8800 nvidia or a hd 7770 ati i could also put a fan underneath it http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41y9XSjx4gL._SY300_.jpg if i can find somebody to make a padded steel footing similar to the one i designed with mechanical shock absorbers that would be nice if it had 3 inches of smooth travel and non hard bottom out design but if this was not a custom item i would expect it to be a 1000 bucks or more i know the first responders aka the mobile command bus that dhs has uses computers with a special case i want to be able to change out and upgrade hardware from time to time without an engineering degree so that means the case needs to be a normal case and that requires the case to be shock isolated so doing the engineering once outside of the case will allow me to use a normal case and not have to re-engineer the entire setup just adjust and balance the shocks if the weight is changed power supplies can vary in weight a bit but a good power supply is always heavy and typically range from 5-7 pounds but could be close to 10 pounds also another machine being used a dvr but this one will not have a big graphics card something more on the line being a step up from say a mx400 just enough to do hd video dvi and hdmi and it will have an after market cpu cooler that is slightly lighter then the stock as well as some raid cards this unit will likely be anchored in place with little shock protection maybe just screwed to a desk though the feet with a heavy rubber mat under it all solid state hard drives with a high reliability not the cheap budget ones talking about solid state hard drives made for video editing but got to make sure they are not hybrid and are solid state though and though i never heard about hybrid solid state always thought it had a platter or did not

you want a high end video card? you better figure out something internal.

good video cards have close to 1 pound heat sinks, and almost no mounting structure to hold them during bounces. break the graphics card. strong chance your going to break the MB.

good luck, not sure the point of the machine when you mention 200ms latency

I just drew up some plans to have a machine shop make a custom holder out of plate steel that will be covered in foam and upholstery and the computer will be strapped inside this case.

This shell has a steel frame a few inches bigger then then most computers and then will be covered in foam inside and out. so that the foam is compressed when the computer sits in it the steal case is open in the front and back except a small 1/2 inch bar. that will be moveable and it will cover the bottom 5 inches of the computer and will be strapped into place i will still be using a solid state hard drive with this setup i could likely use a normal hard drive unless i hit a bumpy road and i am sure i will do just that from time to time next is seating i am thinking a captions chair will do nicely the LCD screen will be wall mounted like it was a tv wireless keyboard and mouse sometimes you just have to go custom

As long as the cards are screwed in good, I don't see a problem with the video cards coming loose.

Occasional bump down the road won't effect the only moving parts on it (fans) all that much. Assuming you are only using SSD drives. (not Hybrid!).

As far as latency. Note you will be doing battle with everyone else on that particular WiFi access point for the bandwidth and just the normal distance thing.

I would expect your keyboard/mouse latency to be non-issue compared to the 150-200---400ms you're going to see out of some of the Access point areas.

On a cheaper note: If can find them, I have a scientist that travels all over the world with his Shuttle PC. It has twin nVidia video cards and 4 SSD drives. He used to have normal hard drives in it, but they were failing and he wanted something more rugged. That PC probably has over 400,000 miles on it, including icebreaker time.

Call up Panasonic, General Dynamics, Allied Signal or TRW. They all sell computer systems that install in war machines, built to take a pounding.

Seriously though, if you look to the yellow pages for your area, and call some police / fire radio installers , they can direct you to an installer of military grade (police use them) computers. These are f-ing expensive, but have been built to take a pounding. The right case will have things like full length card supports to keep them from popping out of the slots, power and data connectors using screw-down covers or screw-in bulkhead type fittings, etc.

Or just buy a tower PC from alienware dell, and bolt it to the floor in your RV... it should last a while.

I do not want a laptop as this RV is for business and I will be spending allot of time in it after work or just hanging with friends. not much in the way of hiking or travel for pleasure I might have a tablet for taking notes outside of the RV or even reading PF manuals on complex equipment. as I am working for an independent film company my job would would make a laptop inconvenient to carry around a tablet is doable smaller and less expensive rather I am holding a shotgun mic or rigging a set I do not want to keep track of laptop nor would I want to use one while off duty they do not have the performance I want

we have the money to have this fabricated from scratch if we have no other choice

If building a computer, I'd go all SSD other than your external backup drives (which should never be connected unless doing a copy.) That way, if your machine is running while on the road, data losses from a disk crash are minimized... but SSDs are not that reliable, so having a backup is still critical.

Don't discount laptops entirely. A Dell Latitude E6440 or something similar can boot Windows Server 2012 R2 in 3 seconds, especially if it has a decent SSD. Unless you are running the latest version of Crysis at full settings, the video is decent enough for gaming. It won't be as good as a desktop gaming rig, but it will definitely take up far less space.

Remember: Get the Latitude or business line. Not the home/consumer lines. Big difference in tier of service and such.

http://www.shoplet.com/3M-CPU-Mount-for-CPU/MMMCS200MB/spdv Something like that mounted on say the top of a heavy plastic table or something similar. Fitted with proper legs if this has to be custom then it will cost allot more or need to be fitted from existing products porpoised.

we are going with a brand new RV likely a tour grade buss i want to have the option to use the computer while on the road. i do not want video cards becoming dislodged or any big bounces to effect the computer. mounting is not an issue in terms of structure as i will have this done at the dealer that will be customizing it i do how ever want to be able to change the case i consider weight an issue so an aluminum case will be a must but it should still be a full tower for 900 watt plus power supply and high end graphics card external dvr drive good idea they are built for slightly more bouncing then a internal but i will keep an internal for compatibility of installation an OS and just keep it unplugged when not used for OS install so what i am looking for is either a desk with a spring loaded shock absorber on or a wall mount clamp with a similar feature might be custom

My setup works around my DEL M90 Workstation LAPTOP. This is my house setup which has the LAPTOP plugged into a DELL DOCKING STATION which feeds dual monitors ext keyboard, speakers, and mouse.

My other additional accessories to operate my Emergency Radio setup also plug directly into the docking stations port.

In my fifth wheel I had a computer desk setup with the Dell docking station and Monitors including the ext keyboard and mouse all permanently installed. The Docking station was down on a shelf completely out of the way. Just plug the LAPTOP into it and power up.

In my OFF-ROAD TRAILER I had several of these docking station components on a large 3/4-inch plyboard section placed in the non-sleeping tent bed end. there is only the two of so we only need the one tent bed.

I duplicated the same dell docking station , dual monitors etc in my RV setup. This makes it very easy to just take the M90 LAPTOP computer for my house and snap it in place in the same setup layout in my RV trailer. We don't use a desktop computer setup in the house - everything is LAPTOPS now... When we leave the RV trailer unattended we just take the LAPTOP with us...

Has worked out great for us.. I use the Verizon MIFI setup and have it sitting in a WILSON SLEEK cradle which has an external cell phone antenna. This gives us great internet coverage when in the Rv trailer just about everywhere we go thanks to the very wide coverage area offered by the VERIZON network.

The MIFI unit creates a super wide WIFI hot SPOT using the Wilson Sleek external antenna and allows us to connect up to five WIFI enables devices at the same time. We all use our tablets, a second HP laptop computer, etc just like we do at home...

If we go hiking or want to sit down on the beach etc we just bring the Verizon MIFI unit with us. It is small enough to fit in my shirt pocket.

We don't worry about the CG bad connections anymore using the Verizon MIFI WIFI Hot Spot. This also frees up our cell phones for anytime we need to use them.

On my radio Emergency field days Alerts pretty neat running the DUAL 24-inch Monitors in my OFF-RoAD POPUP trailer...

Having a LAPTOP verses a DESKTOP which is bolted down in the trailer somewhere makes more sense to us. I bring several different USB HArd Drives for the various hobbies we like to play with including photographs etc.. When we get back home I just snap the M90 LAPTOP back into the home Docking Station and don't have to mess with transferring things back and forth with a trailer mounted desktop setup.

Works great for us...
