Dish VIP211Z + hard drive question

Hi All,
I have a Dish VIP211Z receiver and just added a 2TB hard drive to use as a dvr. I was shocked to find that if you are recording a program you can't watch another unless it is over the air. On my previous Dish receivers at home, I could record 2 or 3 programs at a time.
Is there any way to be able to record a program on satellite and watch another on satellite?
Thanks!

Or get another box if you can hook two to your dish
I plugged a drive into my vip211 that I took out of an old laptop and I thought it worked very good. You can also record off antenna shows and it's way cheaper then a stand alone tivo.

How do you record shows off the antenna?
  • Dual/two tuners, will let you watch two channels that are on the same satellite
But if the second Channel is on a different satellite, then you need a dish with two lnbs, that is were "skew" comes into play one lnb is pointed at one satellite, the other lnb is pointing at the second satellite, like your home dish

Thanks for the replies. I have 2 211's and a hard drive on each. We use a Winegaurd Pathways x2 antennae. Would I have to get a different antennae or dish to use a dual tuner receiver?

Yep. A rooftop Winegard Travler and/or an open-faced portable like a DISH 1000.2 or 1000.4.

One LNB one satellite, even with two tuners you can only record or watch what is on one satellite,
If the second Channel is on a different satellite..You can't watch it

For multiple satellites, you need a dish with more LNBs

  • Not on the 211 it has a single tuner so only one channel at a time. A 722 has two tuners and other receivers also have two tuners. Most of the recent receivers will accept a hard drive as well to provide additional storage capacity.

If you are using the Tailgater antenna from Dish there is another receiver beside the 211 that will work. I don't remember the model number and I think it is a dual tuner model. You'll need to do some research to find the model.
