Does MSVIEW crash your computer, too?

I use a Morningstar Tristar 45 PWM solar charge controller and I use the MSVIEW computer program to monitor things. But it almost unfailingly crashes my computer when trying to view a system status or run a data logger. We're talking blue screen of death crashing. Sometimes within seconds, sometimes after several minutes. But it is almost without fail. I've had it crash on various laptops with various Windows operating systems, so I don't think it is just my one primary laptop. Maybe the RS232 USB adapter? Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone else has this behavior.
  • It appears that a new RS-232 to USB adapter has cured my crashes. I used the drivers that came with the new cable. Data logging commencing... :-)
  • Although using the latest drivers is the correct answer, in your case I would look at older drivers to see if they work.
I know you posted that you tried various OS and machines.
Do you know when and where you were at OS wise and update wise when it last worked.
It is not unheard that updates to an OS has caused problems with things that had worked especially with rarely used software. I am assuming the software is not a common one. By the way, BSD's do leave a trail and maybe someone can debug it?
  • MSVIEW is a Microsoft Windows application for interfacing with certain Morningstar charge controllers.

I have emailed Morningstar support and they also suggest drivers. I've confirmed my Tristar is on the latest firmware and MSVIEW is the latest release. The last step is the drivers on the RS232 USB adapter. That wouldn't explain the crashes across various computers, but at least it something else to check.
  • I have no idea what msview is, but have you called the vendor? I do know that BSofD is mostly caused by hardware issues so in your case, I would guess out of date drivers to be the most likely cause.
