Galaxy S4 Android lock-screen and phone wipe?

I recently purchased a 'new' Samsung Galaxy S4 android 5.0.1 and had a couple of questions as I get used to this phone.

I am not a heavyweight smartphone user and I never bothered with a lock-screen on my old HTC Incredible because I found them annoying.

I don't use many apps but the first one I put on this new phone was the paid version of foxfi, and it works very well. However, it requires the use of a lock-screen, so here I am with a lock-screen I guess. Probably something I should have for security and all I suppose.

The lock screen is just a numeric key-pad that I enter my magical number on, but I am given to understand that there are other designs or types of lock-screens? Is there easier to use or more secure lock-screens I should be aware of?

Second question involves the remote wipe of the phone should it be lost. This is something else I never bothered with on my old phone but might be a good thing to have?

What input do you have about apps or other means of remote disabling and/or wiping the phone should it be lost?

Bonus question. This phone seems to want to keep a bunch of things running all the time (uses battery life I assume). I frequently hold down the home key to bring up a list of things that are open (or at least the screen is still present). What bothers me is sometimes even if I back out of whatever I'm doing (like the text screen) it doesn't seem to actually close it. I always have to go into the home key screen to close things for good. Or it could be it just stores all of the previous screen images opened during the day, and the app is not necessarily open?

Thanks
