Garmin GPS RV 760LM Question

Hello Folks,

We own the Garmin RV 760LM GPS.

Does anyone know how to change the route from the ones suggested when you program in the address? I would love to customize my routes but the GPS seems to offer only 1 or 2 choices of how to get to my destination. What if I want to drive a route that they are not suggesting? I would love to program it in. I know I can add "via points" in order to change the route but that is very tedious to do and confusing also.

I read the instruction manual and did not see this option.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Leslie

I am glad that Basecamp is usable. But for me it's not worth the time it takes to learn their system. It is not like any other system that I have used. Just my opinion.

Yes Basecamp isn't user-friendly and has a steep learning curve but it's very worthwhile.

In planning I usually study routes so much that I could probably do them without a map or GPS but it's great to have the GPS follow the preplanned route and alert me to upcoming turns etc.

I rarely ever just let a GPS plot a route all on its own. For example, a couple of years ago it insisted that going across Atlanta on surface streets was both fastest and shortest (not) and most recently it thought the best way from Washington, Texas to Cypress should involve a few miles of very narrow farm road. These things aren't perfect; the downfall is always map errors and omissions.

Do it the right way and learn to use Basecamp.
Once you know it you can create any route you like,

I have had the same issue. Base camp is NOT user friendly. I gave up trying to understand their process. I have seen that Garmin has a new GPS that has addressed this issue. I may consider going to the newer unit if it truly address this routing issue. Good luck.

Looks like I was wrong on a newer Garmin. Guess it was wishful hoping.

If our GPS doesn't suggest a route I want to use I either turn off the navigation or ignore the turn by turn directions and drive using the route I want. Eventually I will get to a point along the route that the GPS agrees with and I can then use the turn by turn directions to get the rest of the way to the destination.

Another way of saying this is that if I know the route I want, I don't need the GPS to guide me.

You can also use the Trip Planner function on the 760 to set up a planned route with via points along the way, but the GPS will still take you the way it wants between the via points.

You need to use Basecamp (download from Garmin) to create your route, then transfer it to the device. You'll be able to use shaping points and waypoints to your heart's content to force it to go where you want unless for some reason such as a low clearance that route can't be taken.

Afaik the 760 has only 1 via point.

To go the way I want, I break up the route into sections that the GPS will have no choice but to go that way. What I mean by that is that I may go 100 miles to destination A, then when I get to A, I tell it to go to B. And so forth. That seems pretty straightforward and obvious to me.
