GPS Mapping without internet connection

I recently upgraded my Laptop from Windows XP to Ubuntu 12.04 and would like to install my Microsoft Street and Trip with GPS or some other program that will run without internet on Ubuntu. If anyone has run into this same dilemma and found a fix or alternative I would appreciate your input. Thanks
  • I use maps from the Open Street Map project on my iOS devices with an app called City Maps 2Go Pro, and that still falls way short of Streets and Trips for real-time navigation use. I don't know of an equivalent for the Ubuntu world, that is a much smaller market. In the world of open source, freeware, even payware, someone needs a really strong personal drive to create an application, or there has to be a financial incentive, which often is just not there. There are lots of GPS, GIS, and mapping tools in the open source world, for a programmer to put something together, but nothing I know of ready to use.

You would likely be better off using a dedicated navigation GPS, or a GPS navigation app on a smartphone. There are several available, including brands like Garmin and TomTom, one of which loads and stores the map data, as well as Google Maps which downloads as you go.

I've taken two computers over to the Ubuntu world, I just don't have the expectation that I can use them to do everything I can do on my Microsoft or Apple OS computers, which also have mutually exclusive capabilities.

There are also things I do in the Ubuntu world that I cannot do with Windows or Mac, simply because the open source development model provides practical immunity from copyright laws that limit what can be developed for corporate-owned computing platforms.

When you choose an OS, you open some doors. When you choose just one, you close others.
  • Crossover from Code Weavers runs on Linux and it allows Windows binaries to be run without the need for Windows itself. There is a trial version you can download to try. Microsoft Streets & Trips isn't listed as a tested application but it may work or work good enough for what you want.

BTW, Crossover is also great for running Windows apps from older versions of Windows too.
  • You might be able to install WINE to your Ubuntu which runs Windows software under Linux. There is sometimes limited function with this and may or may not recognize the GPS USB connection. The other possibility is to reinstall Win XP on the laptop in a dual boot with Linux. Then boot into XP to install MS S&T, run it from XP, and all will work as it should - and there is no need for any internet connection.

While Linux often looks like a good alternative to Windows, there is very little commercial software that supports it.
  • MS S&T works with both USB or Serial port.

MS S&T runs on any version of Windows XP or later.

    But most importantly:

MS S&T will not run under Ubuntu which was the OP's original question was.
  • If I recall correctly, Microsoft Streets and Trips and Microsoft MapPoint only work with a serial connected GPS, not USB. There are software drivers for some USB GPS units that will assign them to a COM port, but none that are 64-bit when I last checked. You may be able to connect a Bluetooth GPS and assign it to a COM port.
  • We run Microsoft Streets and Trips with a GPS on Windows 7 without an internet connection and it does fine. Construction updates aren't there but other searches like food, camping, rest stops etc. are. If it works on another OS, all the features should be there.
