Looking for DVD surround sound receiver

Thanks everybody, I can see that I was looking at this wrong and there are more than enough home theater systems that will fit the bill. I appreciate all the help. :)

Early last year our Bose unit went crazy. I got an RCA Home Theater 5.1 unit at Walmart for $158 and bought a Magnavox DVD/CD player for $39 also. All of this hooked up with HDMI cables. I used the Bose speakers and it sounds great. We can also plug our iPod into it and listen to all our CDs.

I just finished a project similar to yours. The old DVD player (actually part of the radio) stopped working and the audio amplifier stopped. Other parts of my system worked fine, DirecTV (SD receiver not HD), my TV is an LED with HDMI inputs, and my coach was wired for 5.1 surround sound and even included a subwolfer. Plus, and most importantly, I had limited space in my cabinet. The cabinet was 12" deep, 5" high, but very long.

After doing a lot of searching, I found that units advertised as "Home Theater" systems would fit my size restrictions and my requirements. I chose a Sony unit that has HDMI inputs and outputs, FM capability, AUX inputs, and USB inputs. I sold the speakers on Craigslist when I was finished.

So now, I run the DirecTV video to the TV using S-Video, the audio runs to the home theater where it is amplified and output to the speakers. Blu-ray, regular DVD's, and CD's are played in the home theater system and output by HDMI to the TV. FM radio is played from the home theater and my IPod is played using an iPod dock that came with the unit, and digital movies are played from a USB flash drive that I preload at home.

The most difficult part of my install was finding all the speaker wiring that was hidden and tapping into those wires.

It may be an OK compromise for you too. It is really two units in one. It's internal sound processing outputs to three pairs of stereo speakers to three zones/rooms. It's DVD player upcales and has an HDMI out that allows the use of an HDMI input to a TV which is better than Composite RCA yellow. It will also except Digital Optical input but will downgrade it to stereo. Definitely not a home theater setup but fine for my rolling outhouse. It also accepts USB and stereo from other sources. Also has a weather band. It will NOT output 5.1 surround to its speakers.

I mainly bought it as it was a direct replacement for my original CD only model.

Thanks I'll take a look at those systems. I'll also browse the Crutchfield website. I'm thinking I was searching incorrectly in the beginning.

The DVD player on my All inclusive Surround Sound player stopped reading any DVDs.

Everything else works great........so I bought a stand alone DVD player stuck it to the top of Surround Sound player with velcro strip & plugged it into 'aux' port.

Cost $29.

As I mentioned above, my space was limited. Measured the width, height, and depth of my opening. Went to Best Buy store and measured the units. They had a couple that would fit the opening. All came with new speakers. Chose the one with speakers closest in size to my old ones. Still needed to open up (read saw out) the cabinet openings a little. Used the existing wiring. Connected TV audio out to new system audio in.
Much better sound than the OEM system.

Take a look at the Sony BDV-N790W.

I have an earlier model. A bit pricey but you get wireless rear speakers. You do need a 120 plug in the rear for the rear speaker receiver. Because the rear speakers are wireless it is very easy to install. Great sound.

Search for Home Theater System AM/FM and you should find some with a slim line receiver.
It may also come with speakers that you don't need, but you should be able to find a whole system at a reasonable cost.
