MS made a "dual sign-in for Hotmail"

We got home from San Francisco today.

My Outlook (Hotmail) allowed me on with my computer. There was an e-mail from them suggesting my account was hacked. They said if I was the person trying to get on to ignore the message.

I can change the method they notify me if wanted.

This is called two step verification and it is optional to add this to your account. This is another step in addition to using your password to use your account, when you or someone else tries to sign into the account.
You currently should have a telephone number and an email address setup in your account security. When your security info is current, we can use it to verify your identity if there's ever a problem. This is required if you or someone else tries to change your account information.

One of the reasons I have a free Google Voice(GV) phone number. I don't give out my home or mobile numbers. But can still phone or text me, though have calls in GV auto routed to voicemail without ringing my phones.

I had my Hotmail hacked several years ago. I was told to change the PW every month. They grabbed all of my contacts and then started sending them spam.

For those who don't care if someone else reads your email, it really isn't about the hackers reading your mail, it is more about gaining access to an email account to which they can spam and collect email addresses until provider shuts it down.

Your friends and family will thank you, by not hating you, for keeping your account secure.

I have heard rumors to the effect that HotMail is going to the dual log in system in order to make it harder to hack into your accounts.

I use two banks, one of them uses such a system, Will take you about 2 minutes to get used to it when it happens.

I know about the mobile number. No one gets that except friends, period.

This is actually MS attempting to protect you from someone hacking into your email account. When you log in from a different computer that you haven't logged into from before, MS asks you to confirm that it is really you logging in and not someone else.

At some point in time MS probably asked you to setup a mobile number to associate with your account (they did for me), that way you could have used your mobile number instead of your home number to do the validation.

Security can be a PITA at times (it irritates me as well) but don't blame the programmer, blame the dishonest hackers who are really to blame and force us to prove who we are.

From Monkey44's description, it sounds like he may have been directed to a page where you can request a one-time code that will allow you to login one-time only. That code is to be used if you wish to login from a public computer such as a computer in a library.

I had a hotmail account that I rarely used. I went to sign in and was instructed that I had to sign in with a google account. Same thing happened to my blog. Again instructed to have a google account to log in to it.

I ditched both. Can't log in to delete them but I'll be darned if I am going to be 'forced' to to give google info to access those 2 accounts of mine that I have had for over 10 years.

I don't do anything related to google anymore period. They are into everything.:(
