Netflix Tech Support Scam - Video

Malwarebytes uncovers a brazen new Netflix Tech Support scam recorded on video. Click the above graphic for popup video.

The scam involves a fake Netflix website where an unsuspecting subscriber logs in, only to discover their account has been locked for suspicious activity. They're told to call a toll free 800 phone number, and speak to a Netflix representative. The subsequent scam conversation was recorded on video.

A fake support technician scams the would be victim into downloading software, which is actually a remote client, allowing the caller's computer to be searched for personal info. The tech also offers to fix the victims computer for a fee using a credit card.

Malwarebytes traced the scam as originating from India. You can read the blog article at Netflix Phishing Scam leads to Fake Microsoft Tech Support.
  • Saw that.

Maybe a coincidence, but we got a Netflix email titled "Houston we have a problem" and the message said we sent our own DVD or CD by mistake, and they would return it and we were to return their DVD with the next one we send back.

Did a quick malwarebytes scan which is ususlly clean, and it flagged a "pum.hijack.startmenu". Doin' a full scan now.

    May all be coincidences.
  • Similar problem with Microsoft, got a skype call with a very accented middle eastern voice (my bet Pakistan) trying to tell me my computer would self destruct if I did not, and at that point I hung up.

The "Houston...problem" is apparently a Netflix standard. The problem they reported was wrongly directed at us. They sent us a copy of someone else's returned DVD with a wrong DVD in a sleeve with the same title as the movie we had out.

The pum thing was likely from a start menu change I made.

So, nothing to add to the OP scam w/r Netflix.
  • Had a basic-computer-user friend google for Gmail support and got a fake website. They checked his computer and said it would be $250 to fix everything. When he declined, they offered a $25 senior discount!
