Rand McNally Rv gps for iPad

Just wondering if anyone has downloaded this lately? I know there were a lot of issues when Apple came out with ios7. Apparently there has been an update to correct this issue but haven't heard any recent reports.
  • I am not familiar with this app. Hope to get some info. We have a great Garmin GPS, but sometimes wonder if we need that RV GPS they have at Camping World?? Hate to buy another one. We are going 3 ft. longer this year and worry about getting into some situations like we have gotten into in past following the GPS. Ended up in places where you barely turn around and had we been longer at that time......welllllll???? I have an iPad so maybe this would work for us? Input please

I'm really surprised nobody has commented on this. It looks like a great app and there were a lot of reviews on the App Store up until they came out with this new update correcting the download issues people were having. Now there aren't any current reviews, I would like to hear if it works before spending the $99.
  • I was just looking at this 10 minutes ago. It looks great but I have the same concerns hopefully someone with experience will post.
  • I looked at it on ipad apps and saw it was $99. I see where the entire RV GPS for Rand McNally is on sale at CW for $250 NOW not sure how long sale is good for. Now Garmin (which is what we have always had) has an RV GPS and it is 7" screen WOW and is $400. GADS ours is not that old. Maybe down the road we will be able to swing the Garmin one (feel more comfortable with Garmin). Gotta get the new camper first. I wish they had that one when bought our new one about a year ago.
  • I have been thinking about buying this app. In fact I bought an Ipad Air with this in mind specifically.
I have the 5inch rand McNally - it would be much better on my 9" ipad.
As far as I cam tell it is identical to the stand alone units. So if you have an ipad or are going to buy one this is a great deal.
I just wish I could import my own pois.
Also I don't know if it will have lifetime updates.
  • As a person with several GPS Apps for IOS devices, I find the price a bit to high for the Rand McNally app. I should also state that I am an IOS developer and frankly believe the vast majority of IOS apps are under priced. if you are not already aware, you should know for the mapping to work on an iPad you need to have the cellular (3/4G) version of the iPad.

Before you spend a $100 bucks, you might want to check out the AllStay app for $10. The user interface is not as polished as the Rand McNally app, but my testing of it has shown it to be very functional and capable with a very large database. I have no connection with the developer, but for the price I find it to be an excellent choice. It is a Universal app also, which means it will run on an iPhone. It interfaces with both apple maps and google maps for turn by turn voice instructions on both the 3/4 G iPads and iPhones.

Quick edit - the app name is actually Camp & RV By Allstays

I thought I-Pad had built in GPS. Mine does. I just put weather on it. Works great.

The GPS comes with the cellular chip. The locations services can still work but in a very much degraded way via wifi. If you have a wifi connection, the location service is pretty good about pin pointing your location, but it won't work for turn by turn voice directions. You don't need to have a cellular contract for the GPS to work, but you do need an iPad with the 3G/4G capability. If my memory serves me right that is about a $150 option. You cannot add the option to a wifi iPad, although some companies do make a GPS add-on for the iPad and iPhone.

  • There are a lot of worthy gps units and apps on the market however being that the rand McNally app allows you to put the parameters of your coach in such as length, weight, height, propane etc....

So when making a route it will automatically avoid low overpasses, roads and bridges with weight and length restrictions, tunnels ( can't have propane tanks in them)etc....
