We are putting our camper at a full time campground this year. The campground is about 50 miles from our house. The campground doesn't have cable hook up but you can get some channels with the antenna. My mother goes with us once in a while and she likes her cable channels and she has Directv at home. My question is can I get a RV Directv kit from EBAY and order another receiver for her house to put in the RV? Would this work in the RV or will the reciever only work in her house? I have Comcast cable at my home so I am clueless to how directv works. Thanks

I do just that - take a receiver from the house and use it in the trailer. I got VERY tired of trying to properly aim the regular satellite dish, so I bought a Winegard Carryout. I LOVE IT. At home, in the driveway, I can get local channels and when far away from home, I get all but the local channels - no fuss set up at all. I don't know if you will be able to get your locals at your camp site...you'll just have to try it and see. I believe the extra receiver is $6/month (at least that's what I pay per receiver).

No issues as we do the same thing and bring along a spare HD sat receiver from home when we are RVing. All the same channels we have at home and locals to if we're within a few hours from our house, the spotbeam that carries our local programming is quite large in our neck of the woods.

If you have to order an additional SAT RCVR it will add to your account which is not all that expensive.I just bring along a SAt RCVR from the bedroom and all I had to purchase was another SAT DISH. I got the two port portable dish setup.This way I can bring TWO SAt RCVRs from the house and hook each one to the two DISH ports. Then I can run one in the bedroom and the other one in the living room area of the trailer. Each one can select its own SAT CHANNELS. I always use the VIDEO OUTPUTs from the SAT RCVR to the trailer TV Inputs. Then I can select SAT TV, OTA TV, or CABLE TV if connected by just using the remote control unit on both my TV sets.This is all condoned by DIRECTV so you don't have to think you are doing something illegal. Like mention above you will lose your local channels as soon as you leave your neighborhood ZIP CODE. One thing to think about is to always bring along your account info as my SAt equipment is old and I usually lose my SAT TV setups when I unplug it after a few minutes. This makes me have to call SAT TV to turn it back on for me so you will need your account info to do this. You can also do this on-line if you have internet connections on the road.Losing your local channels can be overcome by using the Trailer OTA BATWING antenna to pick up the NATL BROADCAST from the local towns where you are camping. As a matter of fact the local town Natl Broadcast is transmitted in full high def mode and is free to the public and is much better on the eye then the standard DIRECTV sat rcvr signal.After I figured all of this out I stopped bringing along my DIRECTV SAT RCVR stuff. We just watch OTA NATL BROADCAST HDTV everywhere we go now. Usually get 6-36 Digital TV signals everywhere we go here on the East side of the US. If there is a special SAT TV channel we want to watch will just downstream that from the Internet.Roy Ken

If not, HD might also not be necessary either. If they have no HD, are happy with no HD then don't worry about HD and just point the 18" dish and be done with it.
The important part is to enjoy, not struggle.

We use a "home receiver" at our seasonal site. Bought a sat dish from a local retailer where our site is. We get all our home local channels just fine. Our seasonal site is 200 miles from our home.

The campground is 50 miles from her house and the area is covered by the same local news. I think I will probably pick up local networks

If you're not interested in HD, yes. Once you've seen it, never going back...

For not that much more money, you can do full HD.

When I am camping we usuall only watch the news in the morning. That wil probably change a little with the full time site. I am happy when the campgrounds cable isn't all full of static.

Thanks everybody! So Directv is ok with this practice? So all I have to do is call them and order a standard box and a standard 18" antena kit from EBay and I am good to go?
