Speaker with embedded volume control?

We have a 5 1/4" speaker directly over our kitchen sink which is linked to our entertainment system. While the volume is fine for watching a movie, it's way too loud when washing dishes. Ideally, I'd like to find a speaker with an embedded volume control. I did find one, but it was too large, with an 8" cone. Anyone find a solution? I could mount an external volume control next to the speaker in the ceiling, but that sounds like way too much work.

Any thoughts?

Thanks-

dave

PS...whew. Didn't mean for the pic to be that large. sorry.... :0)
  • Actually tried that before I posted this question. First, it muffles the sound. Second, when we're watching a movie, I want the volume up! I need to be able to adjust it.
  • If you don't want to go to the trouble of installing a control you could pop off the speaker grille, cut up a piece of padded material, and place it inside the grille to muffle the sound. If one piece is not enough add 2. I'm thinking one of the oil absorption mats they sell at auto parts stores would work well but anything that can provide muffling quality would work.

Yes you can Radio shack used to carry these but the on line catalog was a pain in the operating system (They improved it don't you know)

Make sure the unit you buy can handle the power

This one is for Two Speakers (Stereo) so you use just one half of it for one speaker,

This one is a single, One speaker.

Now on both of these you need to solder wires on, you will also need to remove the speaker and install the control next to the speaker and then replace the speaker.

NOTE: Appearance alone is not enough. The devices I linked to are rated 100 Watt (you can likely get by with less but ....)

The photo however is kind of hard to tell the difference between a SPEAKER control and a more common volume control.. Which has a rating of closer to 1/4 watt and woudl burn up quickly if hooked in the speaker line. So make sure it has a rating at least as high as your amplifier. In my coach those 100 watt devices might strain depending on which radio is feeding the speakers.
