WDW8 Q?

This new Toshiba LT has WDW8, and what it calls "Turbo boost" which is a thing that speeds it up and runs the fan when gaming ...I think

Well, I don't game at all ... and I think when using some programs it thinks gaming, and the fan short cycles - it's kinda annoying to keep cutting in and out every few seconds.

Anyone know how to turn off the gaming turbo - I'll never need it - at least I think that's what's doing the short cycles.

Or if anyone knows why a fan short cycles - my other LT's never did it.
  • We're on WIFI at Verizon and so limited on streaming so we don't do that at all - and don't do games.

I've noticed it 'adjusted' itself, and now hardly ever comes on ... it seemed weird to me, as I thought too, temp control, but the the two / three second on threw me because that can't cool anything very much... anyway, thought I'd had something on that should be set somehow, but apparently not. Thanks for the insights

The fan is controlled by a thermostat.. It speeds up when the processor generates more heat, The Turbo mode has nothing to do with controlling the fan save that when in turbo the processor makes more heat. But streaming video can do it, so can heavy graphics on a web page or heavy duty number crunching recalculating a spreadsheet. ANY CPU intensive operation of which gaming is but one.

Don't know if you're right or wrong, am technicapped pretty much and just a 'user' of the end product.

Well, I suspect it is something to do with the heat, a fan, and a good thing. But I would also suspect it should come on when it heats up and then shut off when it cools. But this one comes on about every time I 'spin the mouse wheel' and then shut off immediately when the mouse wheel stops - so it's triggered by the mouse, which is generally more a 'game tool' - I'm guessing.

And right, middle of the road computer - that's what I bought for a middle of the road price. But am wondering about the fan as it seems odd to just come on for two or three seconds at a time then shuts off again. Don't want to defeat its purpose but the two / three seconds on would seem to accomplish nothing. I would expect a fan to actually 'fan' longer than that to cool any components.

If that's the way it operates, then fine - it just seems odd that short a run, as it never stays on longer than than, no matter how long I'm on the PC.
  • I'm not familiar with Toshiba's but you can usually control that behavior in the BIOS.
  • Just goes to show that nothing is ever truly new. The last time I had a 'turbo boost', the PC had an 8 MHz processor.

  • The fan comes on when needed to cool the computer. You get what you pay for and your particular computer is noisy.

Some computers like mine have energy management. You will find it under options in "My computer".

Your new computer most likely came without a manual. Par for the course now-days. Find the built-in help program and type in "energy management".

Without a real manual I found the Help program really needed to get used to Windows7 and the computer. With windows8 I hope you at least were shown, or remember how to get to the "start" for a conventional menu.

P.S. I thought you purchased an i5 computer. You need an i7 computer with a "state of the art" high-speed graphics chip for gaming. Your computer is middle of the road computer cpu.
  • This has more info on it. Faster processors run hotter. Other designs might contribute as well.

I suppose you could see if you could throttle the CPU back, but then that defeats the purpose of the faster processor.
