Win 7 CPU Usage

I am on my home desktop that I just installed 7 on to replace XP. Right now, the cpu is mostly under 5% with 43 processes. I do notice that the cpu will jump up to the 50%-60% range every so often. All I have up is Chrome. The computer also has Norton Internet Security which is on all of the time. She runs great and I'm glad to be on 7.

I do not know anyone under 60 and the ones I do know, know less than I do on computer stuff , therfore I turn to this site and the more learned.

After finally figuring out Task Manager, "Presentation Font Cache" was using 50% of the CPU. Google found http://blog.tune-up.com/myth-buster/the-case-of-the-mysterious-presentation-font-cache-cpu-hog/

Solution #1 did not work. Solution #2 did.

My System Idle is 85%++ and the fan only runs when required.

Honestly I've yet to come across a teenager that knows diddly about computers. I think that should be filed under the heading of "Urban Myths". :)

And most of the kids I've seen know very little about the inner workings of their phones. They just want to be able to text and play "Angry Birds". That's one of the reasons Iphones and Apple products are so popular: messing with the inner workings is discouraged.

However the numbers for Firefox are not that far out of line depending on how long you've had it open. It still has a memory leak (nowhere near as bad as it used to be) so the longer it's open the more the memory usage will rise. "Svchost" does seem pretty high.

What program/process is showing the highest numbers under the "CPU" tab? That would tell you directly what is hammering the CPU.

Besides, teenagers now days know NOTHING about computers but give them a cellphone and they will be able to unlock anything in the world with two finger gestures..

OP, your Firefox is using a lot of memory, about 100K more than mine and you have a SVHOST which is 110K, that is a lot of memory being used.

I still suspect you have a recent Windows update which was corrupted during the download.. If this started after say a Tuesday (which is when updates are typically released) then that is my prime suspect.

I had an issue with my PC after Tue this week with my PC (although I am running XP it may still apply to you). It took until yesterday before the update finally downloaded correctly. The problem though with Win7 is once an update has been downloaded in a corrupted form the update program never ever attempts to redownload it..

Try MANUALLY running Win7 updates and see if it shows any failed updates...

Otherwise you might wish to consider the usual fix things like antivirus, anti-malware, adware scans to see if there is an unwanted "guest"...

I would recommend taking a look for failed Windows updates, failed updates often can use 50% of your processor.

Look for a SVCHOST.EXE under task manager in the PROCESSES TAB which is at 50% and that will most likely be the update trying to install...

If it is a failed update you need to read up on how to fix it, not an easy task now days..

88 Running and 99 Stopped.
