Best source for used Class A or Class C?

Hello to all,

Thanks to all of the very kind members who replied to my introductory post last October. It's great to know there is a forum that newbies like me can visit and ask some basic questions before investing in our first RV.

After much thought, I've decided to buy a used Class A or possibly a used Class C if I can find one that meets my requirements. (My initial post asked about the possibility of doing a used school bus conversion, which I have decided not to pursue.)

I've seen a number of used Class A and Class C RVs that I would consider posted on RV Trader, and some listed on craigslist. I have even exchanged emails with a couple of people selling their RVs on craigslist, one of whom lives only five miles from me. However, there were other people selling RVs on craigslist that I replied to who never answered. So now I'm wondering whether there is as much scamming and phishing in the "rvs+camp" section of craigslist as there is in the Personals section of the site? Should I stick to RV websites for my shopping and forget about craigslist?
  • Shop everywhere, and often.

Best deals are often to be found in that Last Bastion of old-school advertising: Your very own local paper!
  • You can find a good RV from most anywhere (dealer, craigslist, newspaper, etc.).

But remember that no matter who you buy from, you can't trust the seller to be honest. Don't take anything for granted. Insist on testing everything. Appliances (check to make sure they run on propane, generator and electric), run water through the system, etc. If they won't let you hook up the water, walk away. If they won't let you plug it in, walk away. Get it looked at by a mechanic. And so on.
  • Just because a seller did not respond to your email or call about an item for sale on Craigslist, doesn't necessarily mean it's a scam. The rate of sales is very fast on CL and you may have contacted a seller that has already sold the item and is no longer responding.
  • I sold two RVs and bought two RVs on craigslist. No problem at all. My own intuition is the best tool. I think I'm savvy enough to know if something doesn't sound right or sounds like a scam, then I just move on. I like talking with the seller. I ask alot of questions to see if they seem to know what they are talking about with the RV....questions about usage, maintenance, history of the RV. Get them to talk about the trips they made in it, the way it handles, etc. This is all just to see if I think they are on the up and up, and if they have been taking care of the RV....aside from me checking for leaks, body condition, engine mechanics, drivability, etc. I like it if they have the maintenance records. And I like to know how someone has been treating their RV.

Like others said, look everywhere. And be patient. The right one will come along.
  • There's no single best source for buying a used unit.

Look at everything before you buy. There are a lot of units available, keep looking until you find the one that suits your needs and budget.
