PLEASE HELP Furnace getting to hot

I have a 2002 Southwind and the furnace gets so hot that it starts to melt the matt that I have at the top of the steps. I will not run it again as I am sure that it will cause a fire. What controls the temp in the furnace. I know there is a over limit sensor, however I assumed that it is only used to if the furnace gets to hot or is the over limit sensor used to cycle the burner on/off to control heat?

I had to raise my propane furnace main front vent off the floor an 1/2-inch or so. The floor area right in front of the hot air flow was turning the vinyl flooring brown. I even installed a small piece of trim aluminum around that area as well..

I don't know if it was going to be a fire hazard or not but sure didnt like the idea of the flooring right in line with it was turning dark brown haha...

  • T-stat controls ON/OFF of furnace based on 'set point'....if inside temp is reaching set point of t-stat and not shutting off....bad t-stat

HI limit switch.....safety device to shutdown furnace IF furnace chamber gets to hot (typically 190*F)

Blocked air flow (discharge and or return) will trip furnace due to overheating (combustion chamber) or due to lack of proper air/fuel ratio. Usually a problem with trying to start furnace

Excessive heat at one register/area......duct work loose/torn blowing hot air directly at register/area
  • I can only think of 3 things that control temp .. your thermostat, hi limit switch, and maybe air flow (open all vents, make sure no obstructions including return air). I doubt your going to start a fire - have heard of cheap plastic vents getting a bit soft but not catching fire.
  • When you said that it was under the steps, can I make the assumption that this is a 5er? If so, check and see if one of the duct runs has not come off the back of the furnace. I had one come off and it heated up my breaker panel enough that it was causing a breaker to pop. Goode Luck and Happy Camping. As posted above, this time of year is insulting talking about furnace. :B:B
  • You’re not allowed to post furnace questions this time of year. ;)

I think you are on to something with the limit switch perhaps not allowing the burner to shut off.
