Anything to know using OEM brake controller v. aftermarket?

New truck.. for the first time, using an OEM integrated brake controller .. until now, all tv's had aftermarket controllers

Anything I should know/watch out for with this one? Going on the road with tt on for the first time next week

New truck is 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi.. for whatever reason, can't update profile

I got over a thousand miles on them from Texas to Florida. You think that’s enough?

Sure, if they were adjusted up and the controller was providing enough current.
  • The big difference is that the OEM uses brake pressure to modulate your trailer brakes where most aftermarket controllers use deceleration rate of the controller. It is a different feel that will take a little getting used to. Once you are used to it you will love it.

I recently went from a MDT 4400 International to a new Chevrolet 3500 DRW with EOM break controller. This my first time with a truck that has a OEM controller I’ve always used a Prodigy controller before. We are fulltimers and just before leaving out with our need truck our 5er was in to have new drum brakes on all three axles. When I hooked up for our first pull with this truck and the OEM controller even with the gain set at the highest level 10 I don’t seem to have much breaking. Not sure if it’s the controller or or what. Never had this problem when using our Prodigy controller.

New brakes need to go thru a burnishing process, report back after that has been completed.

  • Read the Ram's owners manual about usage and setup.
I had a P2 with my old truck but love the OEM one in my F150 Ecoboost.

The only drawback I had going with my F150 OEM Brake Controller was it was tied to my truck computer/speedometer and other things and when the speed was below 10MPH I think it is was the OEm BRAKE controller would disengage. The bad thing for me was I would not be able holding my trailer brakes ON being stopped at an inclined stop sign by just pushing down on the brake pedal... I did have an override using the OEM thumb lever... It seems to apply brakes to the trailer whether it was moving faster than 10MPH or not...

Other than that I have been very happy with the OEm F150 Brake controller... This is what happened to my 2008 trailer and my 2010 F150 with OFF-ROAD package at any rate...

  • Nothing really to know or do differently. The brake controller settings are pretty straight forward. I LOVE my OEM brake controller. It's light years ahead of the Prodigy I used in the past. Operation is very smooth.
  • Switched from Prodigy P2 to the integrated when I moved up to a 2016 Chevy Silverado. I've liked it very much. I really liked the Prodigy, but I like this better.
  • Go to the trailer set up page on the screen in the instrument panel. You can set up all the parameters for your trailer there. I just turned up the gain until it felt right. You are going to love the way that brake controller works! :)
