B&W Companion Hitch Model 3000

We just purchased a Dodge 3500 6.7 diesel (used) it already had the B&W Turnover Ball hitch installed. The truck also already had a drop-in bedliner which adds about 1-1.5" from the actual bed of the truck. We now have the B&W Companion hitch to hook up our newly purchased 5th wheel. My question is, do we need to cut out the bedliner so that the base of the hitch is completely on the metal bed of the truck? Right now there is only about a 3" hole big enough for the ball to come through the bedliner.

B&W changed the install instructions for the turnover ball at some point.

The instructions that came with mine state you can install over a hardshell bedliner or mat.

But the latest instructions available for download from B&W's website states the bedliner or mat "should be removed, or must be cut" to allow direct contact with the bed, though a spray-in liner is acceptable.

I cut mine, I figure there was a reason for the change.
But I'm sure thousands of setups have been installed using the older instructions without incident.

Like I said above depends on how heavy your RV is. My rig has 4,500# pin weight, if I had a plastic bed liner the hitch would smash it in no time causing movement fore and aft on the hitch.

So get rid of the useless plastic bed liner and have one sprayed in and all will be wonderful!

  • The bed liner will make no difference. The Companion is designed to work with or without a bed liner. Just drop the square post into the hole in the floor of your truck bed and lock it in place using the wheel well lever. Then place the Companion base & u-bolts around it. Next tighten down the bolt that goes through the base into the square post(40 ft lbs). Then tighten the u-bolts (80 ft lbs). I have a rubber bed mat in the bed of my truck and have had no issues.
  • Depends on how heavy your RV is. I would dump the bed liner and have a liner sprayed in. Drop in liners are a joke they rub your paint off the bed and nothing stays put.
  • The instructions explain this issue. I have mine installed over the plastic liner and a rubber mat. What the base sits on matters less than how high the u bolts attach to the post.
  • If it were mine I would want the hitch against the bed and not the liner. But that's just me. I have the Line-X bed coating and the B&W hitch.
