Big gust of wind pushes TT and Truck

Just got back from a 4000 mile trip towing our 35 foot travel trailer with a 2500 HD truck. Driving down a desolate road outside Limon CO going abut 55 MPH through a wind farm(posted speed limit 65 and was a bit windy) and I see all this dirt and weeds blow by in front of me and a 1/2 second later the truck and trailer get hit with a huge gust of wind that instantly shove the truck and trailer about 3 feet over. I could feel the trailer drag the truck over and tell the were no longer tracking together but by the time I slowed down it was all back inline. Everyone in the truck new something was not normal. We tow with a Propride hitch so i'm thinking that helped with the situation but after that it was white knuckle for a few days and when ever I would see wind farms. Just curious if any of you have ever experienced anything like this. It happened once before in SD to me but was not nearly as bad.

Those wind farms need better fences ... ๐Ÿ˜„

There is s stretch of I-90 near here that frequently gets closed to "high-profile" vehicles due to high cross winds. It happens any time of year.
Usually, such vehicles are told to drop off the freeway and go through Livingston, then back onto the freeway a few miles later. That gets them out of the worst of the wind.

Probably a dust devil. One hit us once and moved the motor home from one lane to the other. They are like mini tornados. I doubt the wind farm had anything to do with it. Lots of them in the southwest. If I see a dust devil forming or approaching I slow down and grip the wheel

Yup,

We also call them a Whirl Wind. Happens once and awhile.

When I was young if we saw one on the farm in the fields it was fun to run out into one.

They would take your breath away, make your hair look funny, and you would get hit by cornstalks etc.

High winds. Gusts. Shear winds. Dust storms. Sudden storms. This can happen to anyone at anytime depending on certain locations, risk of said winds is much higher.

What's interesting is not ONE response said you need a bigger truck. Why is that???

Think about it next time the "weight police" guys start their attacks.

It happens quite often. And it can hit a car the same way.

Winds and microbursts happen.

Even to the big rigs.

There is a reason that wind farm was there.

Glad your okay. It had nothing to do with the wind farm. There's no need to fear them.

It happens. Your hitch helped a ton. Drew helps, but it seems you have enough tow vehicle. Store heavy things low in the trailer, fill your tanks if you expect heavy winds.

Friend had his winter trailer flipped by wind on the approach to the Mackinac bridge, ruined their snowmobile trip to the UP. 30 minutes after his accident they closed the bridge to all traffic because the winds were so severe they were even pushing cars towards the edge.

Looking at the trees along the road I don't see any severe wind or any other vehicles effected by wind. Looks like this rollover was sway enduced starting when he swerved slightly to the right. Looks like it got worse each cycle back and forth. He should have let off the gas, kept his foot off the brake and used the manual control on the brake controller to let the trailer brake and pull the TV straight with the trailer.

I was driving over the Key Bridge on I-695 in east Baltimore in my car earlier this year... a low profile Ford Taurus. Wind was pushing me HARD to the right, I had to steer INTO the wind to keep straight. Then the wind suddenly stopped and I almost hit the guard rail. I was glad to only be in a lo-pro car and not towing my trailer that day!!!

We get lots of wind in our neck of the woods making it mandatory to have a high quality WD/SC hitch installed and properly dialed in. Although many of our trips involve using interstates to get anywhere we just go slower when the wind is up and roaring. Have had many instances where wind has pushed us around a bit but not to the extent you are describing, thankfully our Chevy HD 3/4 ton TV has been reliably hauling our 33' 10K# TT all over the four corner states for the last decade even under less than desirable weather conditions.

We monitor weather conditions and get an early start since winds tend to get more severe in the afternoon and early evening hours in our region of the country. Although our current set-up is pretty solid going down the highway, we find it better to not test Mother Nature and if at all possible avoid towing in overly windy conditions. Obviously pulling a 12' high, 8.5' wide box down the highway is not an easy task, windy conditions while underway certainly dictates a slower paced towing agenda to keep towing combination firmly on the road ahead.

Had a wind gust move us over a full lane with our previous trailer/tow vehicle. It is one of the reasons we upgraded tow vehicle.
