E-rate question

head, boy racer who loves anything like this stuff.

Do want to be correct in my advice and wish to learn and/or correct myself

Empirical my comments on load range

Back when working my way through college...one job was in a tire shop. Learned
a lot from the owner. We were one of the high end 'performance' shops dealing
with exotic's and boy racers of the area. Was also the techie kid for the local
Morgan Club and was also hanging out with the older guys in SCCA (never joined
as it cost too much...the safety equipment cost).

My take is that back then, no LT tire had 'numeric' load designations. Just
the letter load designations. Never saw that reference in any of the OEM tire
brochures (60's...before the Internet)

Recently have started to notice that the OEM tire spec sheets now include the
numberic. Haven't seen them molded in yet.

So, my assumption is that the industry is going towards the numeric and might be
going away from the old ply letter designation. Help me understand that, as am
on an assumption there

Hat's off to you tire designers, as you have designed in such high margins
that with all the abuse the general public does to their tires...amazing that
more accidents happens

Quite the opposite. Load Ranges were invented because there was confusion about the other way of doing it. For some reason, that old way hasn't died out - and apparently, some folks think it's the new way. Sorry to inform you otherwise.

Better to use the 'new' numeric designations and know that folks will

ON that, suggest to change from 'E' tires, to '10 ply rated' tires. That
is the correct translation for what an 'E' rated tire is...a 10 ply rated
tire

'LT' tires are installed on 'half ton' vehicles by the OEMs (stock
tire for 'that' vehicle) for serious off road optioned vehicles and on
the 'fake' half ton vehicles

Fake half ton, because they have +8K GVWR ratings. These 'fake' half
ton vehicles are also known as 'heavy duty', 'HD', etc...but they are
still correctly in the marketing verbiage: 'half ton' with a suffix
modifier

Tundra owner here, didn't know they were doing that. That must be something they're doing on the newer Tundras. My old '07 came with the P rated tires.

I have the max tow pkg on my F150 and it also came with P rated tires? I replaced them with the Toyo Open Country AT2's which are 10 ply. They are heavier than the P rated tires but the extra stability is well worth the extra weight. I also like the more aggressive look on the Toyo's.

Some "half ton's" are fake half tons, as they have a +8K GVWR, where as the 'regular'
half tons are in the +7K GVWR range. Ranges down to +6K GVWR

Those 'fake' half tons do come with 'LT' class tires.

Fake because so many will NOT buy anything bigger than a 'half ton'...even though
they are about the same size...foot print on pavement

Some half tons with the 'off road' option package does come with 'LT' class tires
because 'P' class will get shredded out there seriously off roading...yes the
OEMs size things for what they consider the worse case out there for whichever
application they are selling into

Folks continually fall into 'absolutism' where one size fits all...like socks,
which does NOT fit all...

Absolutism, meaning that if one 'can' do it, they all can...conversely if one
can't do it, none of them can...

My Tundra came factory with E rated tires. I love my tires. My wheels are rated to handle the 80 PSI max pressure of my E rated tires, though I have never gotten above 65 PSI. The E rated tires are WAY overkill for my 7200 lbs GVWR (I think that's right...) though. When it is time to replace them, I wil likely look for a D range tire. I prefer overkill with my tires though. I find that modern pickups ride WAY more comfortable than my old pickup ever rode. Even with E rated tires, my Tundra rides way better than my 95 F-150 ever did.

OK, well you have one of the odd ball HD F150`s. those are an exception. most standard 1/2 tons come with P tires.

I do agree that running "E" tires on a truck designed for P`s is too much. I would run a "C" if it`s available.

The load ratings are 112 to 113 for some of the tires in your link..
P255/70R18 112T
the S or T is a speed rating.
