Flat Tow a Ford Focus

I have a 2014 Focus I am going to tow, the owners manual says to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Has anyone found the same issue as I have? In order to disconnect the neg terminal you would have to nearly disassemble the car in order to get to it. I ask roadmaster and they feel that disconnecting the postive term will give you the same results. I tend to agree once the battery is disconnected it is disconnected. what puzzles me is after a call to Ford Techs they appear to feel that the neg must be the one disconnected???? Go Figure??

Has anyone been towing a focus mine is a 2014 and using only the positive terminal as a disconnect or has anyone heard differently

My thought is maybe it is a safty issue of hydrogen gas and making an ark when disconnecting and Ford is just covering themselves?
  • There is actually less chance of a spark on the neg disconnect, which is why Ford wants that. But a disconnect switch would be my solution.
  • I had a 2011 Fiesta with the exact same set up as you have. I installed a battery disconnect switch (knife switch) and it worked great.
  • Can you install a battery disconnect switch at a convenient location?
