Gas $$$.

I bought my commuter vehicle about 4 years ago. I travel about 80 miles round trip to work every day. I'm getting anywhere from 35 to 40 miles per gallon. Last year chevy quit making the car I drive. May have to go to the motorcycle when it warms up around here. My other vehicle for towing is the ram 1500 my wife drives just 3 miles to work every day.

I bet the manufacturers thought this through much more thoroughly than we can imagine. The buyers don’t care if it is a real suv or not, they buy it for their own reasons.

Much, much, much more profit in a Chevy Suburban, or a full sized pickup than in a Ford Fiesta or Chevy Spark. Several years ago I remember reading an interview with one of the Big 3 top execs. He said something like "we will tell the American people what they want". Think this was around the time the Japanese cars got a strong foothold in the American market. :h

I hope you are considering an electric vehicle next time you purchase.
LEAF, Bolt, Ionic, Kona, e-Golf, Soul, Clarity, i3, 500e, Smart EQ, Niro, Model 3.
All these get 112 to 150 MPGe in city driving.

Usually, but sometimes it goes down, sometimes it stays the same. Really, what difference does it make? Either you bite the bullet and go, or you bite the bullet and stay home.

Depends on how long you keep your cars I suppose. Most car companies have 8 to 10 year warranties on their batteries. The battery should be good for the life of the car. Even early leaf batteries which were iffy in hot conditions are still in use in cab fleets. Some with over a quarter million kilometres. And things have come a long way since then. It’s a legitimate concern but I wouldn’t over think. Assess your needs based on losing 40 percent of the range over the life of the car. Early Tesla’s with 160,000 miles are seeing about 10 percent degradation. Batteries deteriorate less in cool climates than hot climates.

Or you go on a forum and have a vein popping conniption event over it LOL. The time spent doing that may have been better spent working a few hours of OT, or doing something on the side to pull in some extra bucks, to get the additional funds to make up for it?
