GMC Yukon 4 down question

I currently tow a 2005 GMC Yukon 4wd behind my 2005 Discovery. It is set up for four down with a Blue ox tow bar and we installed the MG air brake system on it years ago and it all works great. It is very easy to hook up then push the electonic button then it free wheels. Problem is the yukon is about worn out - it has 300K miles not to mention another 50K being towed - it has been to Alaska twice - just basically worn out. We want to buy a newer nicer Yukon or tahoe - my question is what years and models will work just as good as what we have??
  • Robanddi, we had a 2015 Denali and there is a programming issue with the transfercase that needs updating. Ours would get stuck in 4wd. This might clear up the problems you are having. I currently tow a 2015 GMC pickup with no issues.
  • We have a 2015 GMC Yukon Denali which we tow behind our Foretravel. We love the car and it tows nicely. But the dinghy towing instructions in the owner's manual are incorrect (i.e. if you follow them exactly, an error code is initiated which prevents the transfer case from getting out of neutral when you detoad later). We had to tow the car to a dealer twice to get transfer case out of neutral and back into 2wd.

Furthermore, the instructions in the manual are in two sections with overlapping steps. The manual came with a supplement/correction for the procedure; however, those steps are also overlapping and incomplete. Finally after the 2nd tow, we received a service bulletin issued in August, 2014! IT TOO GIVES INSTRUCTIONS BUT THEY STILL REFER BACK TO THE MANUAL AND YOU STILL HAVE OVERLAPPING STEPS! BUT it does contain information on how to reset the error code which prevents vehicle from getting back to 2wd (pulling a 30 amp fuse).

It has been a nightmare trying to figure out which redundant steps are necessary and which are just doing the same thing over and over again.
  • All the big 3 have 4x4s that can be flat towed. Just be sure to buy one with a 2 speed transfer case and neutral tow position. There are some 1 speed AWD variations that can't be towed.
  • I've been towing 4W down, a 2013 Yukon for the last 2 years. I just have to put the transfer case in neutral, hook up the Blue Ox and go. I have never disconnected the battery or anything else.

  • With the proper transfer case, they will all work well. The newest ones require the battery to be disconnected, just another step.
