Identifying rubber roof type

Reaching out for some help here!

A friend of mine got a good buy on a 2009 Golf Stream Trailmaster. It almost looks brand new. It has spent most of its life in a park under a cover. The roof is still white! But it is 6 years old and the caulking on the roof is cracking and starting to peel off. So we need to caulk the roof. But how do identify the roofing material - TPO or EPDM? I want to make sure I get the proper material to seal up the roof.

Thanks!!!
  • A representative told me to use the Ultra Sealant for our TPO roof. I confiremd the roof type by contacting the manufacurer of my motorhome. They also said I would need to use the ultra sealant primer.

    Either way, use Dicor.

Incorrect. I've owned trailers with EPDM rubber roof sheeting and others with TPO ... EPDM is easy to identify because it's smooth and often doesn't lay perfectly flat across the full length / width of the roof, TPO which is a stiffer, vinyl type of material has a grainy pattern that can easily be felt and does lay perfectly flat. EPDM chalks naturally over time, TPO doesn't chalk at all. As noted by Dicor one wants to use caution when sealing a TPO roof as Dicor self leveling lap sealant can be safely used with some formulations of TPO but not with others. For those other formulations Dicor has developed a different two part system called Ultra Sealant that should be used on this type of TPO - use Dicor lap sealant intended for EPDM rubber roofs and the TPO sealant / roof material may bloat or disfigure. :E
  • For what it's worth...I have had rigs with both EPDM and TPO. My TPO had more of a fabric feel and texture than the EPDM. The later is more "rubbery."
  • check the dicor (IIRC) web site showing how to determine which you have. involves pulling off the inside molding around a vent opening.
