looking for support

I have been off of rv.net for about a year, got overly involved in politics to my dissatisfaction. I have noticed little activity on this blog re Disabilities and general health issues. Folks in my circle aged 67-74 do have specific issues some physical some mental some social some aspirational. I had a person ask a question this week about being single, having physical strength problems and wanting to find outlets for targeted tour groups. I am aware of a Catholic group that does tours for seniors four or five times a year. Any thoughts regarding opportunities for single senior.

I didn't say, you say "Hospice". I did say " I see no way..." is tantamount to giving up on a person looking for special needs help using the parallel of sending them to Hospice. In the last several days a couple of suggestions have come up. A medium sized church in the subjects area does have a social group targeted at seniors with the objective of week long bus trips across the south east each quarter. She will also start reading the RV.net forum topics regarding her areas of interest. Living vicariously thru others experiences is a great way to share in the adventures. My wife has done this for years due to her severe polio disability. Last year she bought me a Harley Sportster. I am emotional about assisting folks with disabilities. I try hard to avoid being judgmental and limiting.

:B :C The way I see it at close to 66!
  • Stoloffs, Thank you for caring about folks that have lived with the effects of polio. The disease is rare enough now that there are very few doctors that understand the consequences. Our med provider appreciates when we id a new issue and do an internet search for background info for her. Post polio has two generic paths, one where the concern is premature aging do to over use of remaining muscles, suggesting a more sedentary life is appropriate. The other path where quality of life through remaining active is of dominate importance. We are 69 and will remain active till we can't. Plan this year is to follow the Lewis and Clark trail west from Missouri to the Pacific for 2 months. Tomorrow I will install a new recliner in the motor home{took out the couch} that helps her get her feet up when riding.
  • Rational is good. I have not suggested the person needs a driver. I have seen campgrounds inhabited by long stay individuals(years), who enjoy their lifestyle with minimum support. Keeping the dialogue open generating ideas is the emotional need. I am now up to 3 ideas for the person.
  • OK, folks, let's all calm down and discuss this topic rationally.

DW is both a quadriplegic (polio) & a vocational rehab counselor, so we're able to speak from both sides of the table.

Traveylin, the issue is that, if anyone can't drive their RV, almost no RV touring group will supply them with a driver. They simply can't take the liability risk.

However, if anyone can drive their RV but can't manage their hook-ups (water, power, sewer, CATV, etc.), members of those touring groups will usually offer a few minutes of help. Neighbors at campgrounds often will do the same. (This has been our experience.)

  • I didn't say "hospice." I said he/she needed a campanion to RV. Be objective, not emotional.
  • Politics was on facebook not rv.com " I see no way"....I am not ready to steer the person to Hospice. My first trip rving back from Alaska we stayed in a municipal campground our last day in central Texas. The adjacent folks showed up in a brand new Class C, Had sold their home in College station and were going to tour tell they can't. 82 years old. That's who I want to be.
  • Too much politics on here??? This was the calmest place around, how did you survive the last year?

    Bill
  • I see no way for a person who can't drive and/or manage his/her RV to participate in an RV touring group without a companion.
