My sleep sucks

Brand new TT, queen size bed. Added a foam topper and thick goose down like topper and finally the bed is soft enough and thick enough. BUT... I'm cramped. Can't toss and turn because overhead storage and if not careful I'll hit my head. Wardrobe closets on both sides come down half the length of the bed. And entertainment center is right up against the foot of the bed, making it so you can't stretch out.

Add the wife in the bed and the 2 of us feel cramped and we get no sleep. That puts a damper in the trips and driving back home today I was so tired it took all I had not to fall asleep at the wheel.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but this issue may cause me to trade in. Thing is I just traded up 5 months ago.

Good luck.

DH and I shopped for 7 years before we finally bought a brand new trailer. Thought we had done due diligence after owning 2 used ones, and camping for 7 years...

Tried out corner queen bed with overhead bunk for the kiddo. It was fine for the 5 min. we spent in it at the RV dealer, but OMG, how horrible it turned out to be once we used it for extended camping. Too cramped and the overhead bunk cut down on the air flow so bad we needed a battery fan to keep the air moving. We HATED it. And we had thought about it before we bought and thought it would be fine.

Even though we were used to smaller beds, and having one of us sandwiched against a wall (and needing to roll over the other to get up LOL) we underestimated the effect of that d*mn overhead bunk. And once we added enough foam toppers it too became even "closer" to our faces.

Sorry for the long post. My point being sometimes you think that you covered all your bases when buying or trading up, and then life tells you differently.... and you end up spending more time and money to get something that suits you better. Sorry it's not working out for you and good luck with a solution - and the 2 bed option might be just what's needed in your situation.

Our best camper was a vintage Shasta that had twin beds! LOL

Sorry to hear about all your troubles.

I would be measuring the thickness of your current mattress and extra padding. If you could find a mattress that is shorter but more comfortable, it would solve your problems. I found that a mattress topper makes the bed very warm, and took off the mattress topper after a couple of weeks. Then bought a pillow top mattress to replace the factory one that was then about 7 years old. .

Good luck!

Always bought new RV's and removed the RV mattress the 1st week of ownership. Replaced with an air mattress (usually AeroBed) with an internal air pump with a tethered inflation control for the divided each side. Layed an thick egg crate foam over it years ago but now put a 2" thick Memory Foam on top of the air mattress. Ends up the same total thickness as the original RV mattress so there's no clearance issues over our heads for hitting and the inflation can be controlled for both her and my likings. Works super.

The sliding door are easily removable and stored at home so the 1.5" additional length can be permanent and both sides will have open ventilation etc. If desired, an accordion type folding door can be mounted on the RV wall each side so it closes to the entertainment center if wanted or any distance desired on either side.

Sounds like you have a short queen bed (75" long) and maybe with a little work, the entire entertainment center can simply be moved 5" away from the foot end of the bed and screwed in place. Then a filler put in and an 80" long mattress used. That would give you 5" extra over your 75" (6'3") body length.

Any of this is so much cheaper than replacing a newly purchased RV. Think your way thru fixing your problem as that's free and can be very productive.

Food for thought!

I'm a VERY light sleeper that tosses and turns all night. I'm usually out of bed 5-6 times each night and it doesn't matter what bed I'm in. I started taking Melatonin supplements a few months ago and it's like a switch was flipped. I can now sleep through the night and there's no grogginess that you get with sleeping pills.

If you're tossing and turning, this is certainly easier that a new mattress and tearing cabinets out. Something to think about.

If I may ask how did you wind up with such a terrible bed while shopping for your trade up?

It may be cheaper to trade up again but you could try talking to some custom cabinetry makers about redoing the interior, around a more sensible bed.

When we upgraded, our main thing was a walk around bed. Our previous was not. While this one is technically not a true walk around we can enter and exit on our own side instead of crawling over each other. We felt it wouldn't be an issue. After using it a few times, this closed up BR is an issue.

Buying campers is like buying a home mattress. You have a limited time to try it out and don't know how its gonna work out in the long run until it gets some use.

No one needs an "entertainment center", anymore. If you have a disc player or sat receiver, install a shelf up high. Mount your screen on the wall or ceiling. Remove the rest of that TV cabinet.

I extended the bed frame in ours and put a memory foam topper on. Ours is a walk around so there was room. Could you sacrifice part of the space in the entertainment unit to cut a cubby hole to extend the bed a few inches? Too many things are on the wish list for a new trailer, but for sure my next one will have an 80" bed!

OP here,

I'm 6'3. We think we improved the factory mattress enough so its the space that is the problem. Wife has to close her sliding door to get that extra 1.5 inches to stretch out. We have to leave one bedroom door open or it gets stuffy in there. So yes the bedroom is claustrophobic.

I don't think I have many options here. We think just one of us in the bed would help. So we may try a good quality air mattress for the living area (Twin size) for the wife lol Sounds bad I know, but She's the smaller one .

Not sure what you height is but I am 6 feet. At times I have my feet pushed up against the entertainment center and sometimes I have them off the corner and along side of it. Our over head is high enough that it is not an issue. It is hard to make changes without doing damage. We will be looking for a new mattress this year after 3 seasons.
