Need small truck to tow with automatic trans;can't find one.

Unless you modify a new 4X4 truck you don't feel the difference between ad 2wd & a 4X4. We don't do off roading any more and now we use a 2013 Honda AWD CRV for our toad, very comfortable. Has plenty of room in the back if we want to carry items and would make a great daily driver with good mileage. Dick

You didn't mention what engine you have in your MH. Would make a big difference of what your MH can comfortably tow.

Hi, all, and thank you. The reason we had wanted a 2x4 is that the truck will be my main vehicle, I have an old neck injury, and our thought was that a 2x4 would be a bit smoother ride and better mileage. We won't be doing any off-roading. We have a 1990 Toyota basic pickup now which needs to go to pickup heaven, and we'd like a truck about the size of our 1990, which is a lot smaller than what's called "small" these days, as far as I can tell. We also tend to keep our vehicles a long, long time, so a new one would probably fit the bill from that standpoint. So we have some decisions to make. Thank you for all your suggestions, and please keep them coming.

Living in Colorado, I would think a 4X4 would be a must and easy to find. In 1990 I did the Remco disconnect on a new 2WD GMC AT Sonoma and I never like the way it worked. Go for a 4X4 and make your life easy! Be sure to check the owners manual under Recreational Towing Instructions as not all 4X4s are towable. Dick

Any small pick up you want with a Remco driveshaft disconnect.

You say you don't need a 4X4, but the fact is, most of the pickups that are flat towable without modifications are the 4X4 models. The 4X4 transfer case neutral position is what allows them to be towed 4 wheels down.
I've been towing a GMC Canyon small pickup (twin to the Chevy Colorado) behind my MH for 8 yrs and for me its a perfect towed vehicle. quick & simple setup, no speed or time limitations, no battery drain, no key left in the ignition while traveling
If you look through the Motorhome Magazine 2014 Dinghy Guide (avail free online) you'll find at least 6 small to med size pickups that are towable, but almost all are 4X4

If you are wanting a new truck the Chevy Colorado and twin GMC Canyon are both supposed to be out with a 2015 model this fall. Should be out soon. advertised to be all new and reasonable gas mileage.

The GM twins, Chevy Colorado or GMC Sonoma both are flat towable with auto in the 4x4 version. Some versions of the Ford Ranger were flat towable in 4x4 auto, IF it had the after market "neutral kit" installed. Most Dodge Dakota's are also flat towable with auto AND 4x4, without any modifications.

Ford Explorer Sport Trac is another one. But it has to have the ability for its Transfer Case to get in Neutral. Regular Explorers (the SUV's) had to have a "kit" installed. It was really a flash update to the powertrain control module (PCM) plus an LED to indicate that the driver had taken the correct steps to cause it to go into N. Sport Trac (four-door cab with a short pickup box) might have been set up differently. Quite a few RVers tow them. Heavier than a Colorado.
Used to be nearly all 4x4 were towable since the transfer case had a lever and one of its positions was Neutral. No more. It may have no neutral (Nissan Frontier for example) or be electronic where Neutral isn't an option even with modification. BE SURE the model you choose CAN be towed and you know exactly HOW.
FYI, we like manual shifts anyway, so it was easy to pick a Frontier. Towable 2WD or 4WD. Ours is 2WD and a very nice daily driver. Manual shift also opens up the last of the Ford Rangers. In recent model years, the 2000's, Ranger would be the lightest of the bunch since it's available in "work truck" cab. Also probably the most plentiful to pick from.
