New Trailer Tires - And THANKS

I'm sitting here waiting while the tire shop is installing my new Goodyear Endurance trailer tires. These are replacing the original factory-installed Westlakes, with date stamps of 2013. When I ordered the tires I requested that they ensure that the tires were manufactured within the last six months. They are dated 4419 - only a couple of months old.

I owe a debt of thanks to the people who share their knowledge on this forum. All of the following are things I've learned by reading these forums:

- tires have date codes
- trailer tires age-out before they wear out
- 6 years is about long enough to keep trailer tires
- Goodyear Endurance tires are considered by many to be premium tires that are worth the price
- you can request your tire shop to ensure that they are getting tires that are dated recently
- original-equipment, Chinese-made tires have a poor track record


A caveat: I don't take everything I read here at face value. In fact, I don't take anything I read here at face value. However, reading these forums exposes me to ideas that I can then research further. That's what I do. After further research, I reject a fair amount of what I read here. However, the stuff that I keep and follow up on is stuff that I wouldn't have known about on my own.

    Or allowing the tire's PSI to go too low in regards to the load they are carrying, factored by speed

    When the tread separates from the sidewall, that is a "run flat" - usually caused by a puncture. I've examined thousands of those and 90% of the time I could find the puncture. The other 10% I speculated that the puncture was in the area of the damage caused after all the air was let out - and this was confirmed by Rex Grogan, a noted tire forensics analyst who published a chart showing a study of where punctures occurred in a tire - and 10% were in the junction between the tread and the sidewall.

    The failure mode of interest is a belt-leaving-belt-separation, as described in the Tire Conditions Manual published by the Tire Industry Association. Tire Conditions Manual

    This failure is far and away the most common non-road-hazard related failure mode. It is characterized by the tread and top belt detaching in whole or in part, leaving the rest of the casing intact and frequently the tire stays inflated.

    If anyone has a photo has one of those in a Goodyear Endurance, it would be of great interest. But if someone only has a tread/sidewall separation, that is NOT of interest as that is caused by a road hazard.

    To date, I have not seen nor heard of any.

    So as a friend tells me please prove with pics and testimony these you mention are NOT roD hazard.

    To be honest I can’t believe there have been none my self but I have seen nothing along with CapriRacer.

    Sorry, but I don't any data.

    First, my experience was with a major tire manufacturer and we only tracked RETURNS for THAT manufacturer. I retired 7 years ago, so not only do I not have current data on ANY current tire, I don't have ANY data at all. What I have been doing is looking at reports on this and other forums and the one that stands out is the Goodyear Endurance. It's the only one I know of where I can track when it was introduced AND there have been no reports of failures. I am sure that eventually there will be a failure reported because consumers don't know how to discern the difference between a road hazard related failure and a failure caused by the design. (Please note: My experience says that by far and away, it is the design - that is, the materials used and where they are placed - that results in failures and not defects - things that aren't supposed to be there and things that aren't there that are supposed to be.)


    There are failures of the Goodyear Endurance a few actually. Go to all the Facebook RV pages and you will see pics of them there where the treads have separated from the sidewalls completely the entire way around the tire. I have a few of those pics saved to my phone. I have yet to see a failure on a Carlise Radial HD though...but that may be because they both came out around the same time the Carlise just a few months sooner and everyone is jumping on the made in America Endurance.

    So, yes, I made that prediction in October of 2019 after the season was over. Nothing magical. Just the facts.

    Much the same when hoopla when Goodyear redesigned the old Marathons in the early '00s. The new and improved Marathon came out with a circle 6 stamped on the tire.
    The first couple of years Marathon owners and users crowed how great they were. Granted they were a vast improvement over the old ones.....but after 3-5 years tire complaints started pouring in.
    The Endurance looks like a automotive tire now and doesn't have that rounded sidewall/rounded tread profile that IMO from my experience is not the best idea for a load carrying tire on a trailer.
    The Endurance physically looks like big improvement....time and miles of actual service rolling down the road will show Goodyear made a better ST class tire.

    Just for my own curiosity what does your data show on the new Carlisle Radial Trial HD? I had these on the previous trailer for about a year without any issues and have not notice any failures mentioned on the forums so just wondering if these tires are better now too.

    It’s only a matter of time before someone picks up a nail, runs low and throws a belt or... pulls into a station and drags the hot tires over the curb unknowingly starting a belt separation. The tire victim will post numerous pictures of the fuzzy bead clinging to the rim while swearing to never buy a GY tire again.
    Keep them aired up and covered when not in use. Minus road hazard, should get 5-7 years out of them if you don’t wear them out sooner.
