Oh Oh TKR

I had a TKR in 2009 and was told I was bone on bone on my other knee. It lasted this long but I guess it's time. I had no pain or anything till April dh and I were going out to dinner, stepped onto a curb and bam!!! Haven't been able to walk without a cane since. I get a new knee June 30th!!

I am scared. My other knee is fine but had to stay in the hospital for 6 days due to being sick as a dog. I sure hope that doesn't happen again. I am allergic to shell fish and the doc I had last time said he only put a little iodine on the incision...really??

Don't know for sure if that was it but still not a good thing to do to a person that is allergic.

We were hoping to get away soon but now we'll have to wait. Should have gone when I was in better shape. Oh well. Sure could use some good vibes folks. Thanks for listening to me vent!!!:D
  • emzee, just remember that although the surgery and recovery is painful, you resolve the chronic ache all the time that makes you miserable. My mom, who has had both hers replaced, doesn't have knee issues now, so I can hardly keep up, my knees ache always. I am trying to hold off for a few more years, but probably will have mine replaced within the next five.
  • Thanks for the good wishes appreciate it. I am a nervous wreck as the time get closer I get worse....you would think with the other one done I would be a bit more calm.
  • Sorry you're gonna have to get the new knee. I hear that it's pretty painful at first, but later it's a lot better than it is now. I had knee arthroscopy in Feb and I'm still hobbling around. My friend had TKR the same time and she's practically running circles around me. I asked my ortho why; he said it's because she got all new parts and I still have all the old parts. Ugh. I see a TKR in my future...

Good luck with your surgery. May you have an easy and complete recovery.
  • Thank you!! I really emphasized (NO IODINE) to my doctor new and she wrote a big no IODINE on her paperwork.
  • prayers for a speedy recovery... I would be tempted to take a marker and write NO IODINE.. ALLERGIES on my leg, just above or below where they will make incision. I wouldn't take "just a little iodine". I have a friend whose shellfish allergies keep getting worse as she ages.. ten years ago, she just couldn't eat the shellfish, now if she even breathes in the steam from a passing plate of seafood she will have a reaction. don't let the doc get by with such an excuse.. NO IODINE should mean NO IODINE.
