Patio Mats

What are the most durable Patio Mats? We have the "Solid Steps" and they stick out so far when down that our patio mat is underneath the steps. The two feet on the bottom have ripped through the standard polypropylene mat we bought on Amazon. It's the same quality as those sold at Walmart and Camping World. The mat isn't more than 3/16" thick. Even the feet on camping chairs have caused indents and stretching. There's no tears there but the weave has separated so there's now holes in the mat. This isn't from rough use either. Just normal sitting and relaxing and general movement in the chairs! By the time an hour has gone by, the mat is permanently marred or a new hole is created. I'm interested in something more durable and thicker. Does anyone have a mat that stands up to being used at places other than a concrete patio where it isn't really necessary in the first place?

We have two from Costco, I don't see them on their website, but they are just a plain gray indoor/outdoor carpet. I think they were only like $20, and they have lasted us now 4 years. Even had them stapled down to plywood before while boondocking at a music festival. Pulled the staples out and they still look fine.

Moderator, can you please delete this thread I started. I asked if anyone knew of a more durable Patio Mat and it somehow became a thread about Dying grass and Campground etiquette. It isn't helpful and or relevant to the thread topic.

I'll be the first to admit my parks cannot, and do not try, to please everyone. You like to put out your mats and our experience is mats kill the grass, putting us at loggerhead. This is why all restaurants are not McDonalds, not everyone wants burgers all the time and McDonalds doesn't want to serve sushi.

I have seen a number of campgrounds that prohibit the use of mats because they do kill grass. Just because one stays a few days and does little damage the next campers may throw down a mat in the same place. I gave up on the big mat in short order and just use welcome mats at the doors, keeping them off the grass as much as possible.

You are very optimistic. Usually the grass yellows then dies much faster than your timeline. That is why many parks prohibit mats and rugs being placed on the grass for any period of time. It's a policy we clearly spell out and enforce.

I purchased a length of fake grass carpet in 2004 and attached it to a length of round wood curtain rod, when rolled it rides on the side of the ladder and so far it looks as good as when I purchased it, every once in a while I stretch it out on the back patio and hose it down to remove the dessert sand.

Another option would be to put something additional under the steps where they rest on the mat. Maybe a pair of regular house door mats to take the weight and pressure of the steps.

Unfortunately that website no longer exists. I would be happy with getting 3 years from a mat rather than 3 camping trips!
