As to where you live. I live in the foothills of NC, We have our own version of tornado ally. It's in Vale, near Cat Square. If there is a tornado, it's there. But truly they can happen any where. It's just that they are more common in some places.
3 years ago, I stood on the beach at Lake Wood campground, and watched twin waterspouts, about a half mile off shore. However one did not remain off shore, and came ashore up the beach, and became a tornado right in Myrtle Beach.
So you see, it dosen't matter where you live. Nature is not in our control, Only God, is in control. And at this time I just pray he give the folks affected by the tornado, Grace to handle what is happening to them. That he wrapps them in his arms, and holds them close. They need it.

I lived in Kansas City for 15 years, had to 'take cover' three times in 15 years. I respect the weather but do not fear it. I now live in central Va, I have had to 'take cover' twice in the last three years and one missed the house by less then 500yds. It doesn't mater your location weather is to be respected.

I look at the weather and try to avoid going into storms. If I were traveling in an RV, and a storm poped up, I would get out of the RV a try to find a Wallmart, Lowe's, home depo or other concrete building, and take cover near a wall or in a bathroom.

I was watching reports of the damage and two commentators were saying that, given the choice between staying in a house with no shelter or fleeing, it would be better to get in the car and try to flee. The ditch option was also not advised because of the potential of being impaled by the debris.

I was thinking about the dedicated shelter options and, in speaking of school sized buildings, I don't think it would add a lot to the cost to build a reinforced concrete shelter. The shelter could have a dual purpose such as a storage room or even a library.

Yeah, we all couldn't move away from potential tornados, that would empty quite a few states.

I don't know much about tornados (hurricane expert, Florida native) but I doubt there is a tornado proof shelter given the power of some of the bad ones.

I'll detinitely agree with that statement.

According to MSN, none of the schools had adequate shelter for the children. Let's hope this changes as they rebuild.

This kind of statemet is unfortunately very lame. People live where they live for a variety of reasons. You are prone to nature's ills no matter where you live. Hopefully if you live in this area you have the means to build an appropriate type of underground shelter and keep your insurance policy up to date.

Absolutely irrelevant. I don't know why people can't just show sympathy without having to be critical. People have died. We all know where we live is prone to natures wrath at times. But you know what, anything can happen anywhere, anytime. Fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis. I live in Fort Worth, Texas, in the "alley". My mom lives in Granbury. They were just hit a few days ago. Wiped out a neighborhood, she's fine. Not one person I've talked to has said they are sorry they lived where they lived. Stuff happens people. It's just not necessary to mention these things. But if you feel better saying stuff like that. Go ahead, knock yourself out.

Hopefully if you live in this area you have the means to build an appropriate type of underground shelter and keep your insurance policy up to date.
