Security Issues and Safes for RVs

Any suggestions for a reasonably priced (small) safe. Safe would need to be secured to a shelf, etc. Also, I am told that the keys we use for our entrance doors as well as basement compartments are fairly universal and can be interchangeable with many RVs. I am concerned that locking doors in only a mild irritant to one who is intense on breaking in. Looking for comments.

Ahh I love that were all entitled to our opinions, and are NEVER going to change others. I have locked things on my rig that others have called me foolish, I don't care, I sleep better and if I really worried about the negative opinions of others I wouldn't be able to pay attention to my wife telling me I'm wrong :B. Do what makes you comfortable, I keep mine under the slinky, If they are brave enough to deal with the P-chute they can have it :B

I'm used to it. ๐Ÿ™‚
but I didn't know that in Canada it was standard issue for teen age beer thieves to carry a plasma cutting torch and chain saw with them as they "shopped" for goodies. :s

I am the guilty party that started this brew-ha-ha I guess. So 45 responses later I am on the fence regarding safe keeping certain items. But I have come to the conclusion based on all of the responses that (1) my basement doors lock against steel not alluminum as one posts suggests (soI feel good about that); (2) a safe is good for some or not so for others (it comes down to one's comfort level. So, I am probably going to not purchase a safe but rather utilize the space(s) I have on-board to place my computer, cameras, etc. In other words, continue what I've been doing. Thanks to all who posted remarks and a special thanks to "Bumpy" who took a lot of heat on this one.

And who is the chain saw going to tip off? When I'm camping, I hear chain saws all the time, it's called a forest. I wouldn't think anything of it.. But anyone with half a brain, would realize they'd probably use a blow torch or pry bar to break the safe off.

And you pack up all your valuables everytime you leave your trailer? You must be a fun person, being paranoid with the zombey-apocalypse, end of the world, everybody is out to get YOU paranoia every time you leave your RV.

As mentioned.. you're just looking for an argument..

no I am looking for an answer. now it is more likely that some bad guy sees me walking around with a $1,000 worth of camera stuff around my neck, watches me go in the RV, leave without it, and knows that there are some goodies inside. now are they left out on the table, no. are they in a drawer, no. If you think that a thief is just going to look in your trailer and not look thru any of the cabinets, you sir, are a fool. Under the seat is probably the SECOND place they would look after the closet.

They know you have a $1000 camera.. which more than likely means you have more expensive electronics. Remember, they will wait until they see you leave (they'll wait to see you pack up for a daytrip), then once in the trailer, they have LOTS of time.

Whatever.. If you need a safe to feel like your belongings are safe, have at er..

I've been camping for 30years, I've stayed in walmarts, truck stops,pull-outs, campgrounds, backroads, and all sorts of sketchy places, ALL over North America, and never ONCE has anything been stolen, or have I heard of anything being stolen. Hell we didn't even lock our RV door (except in storage), until we had kids (5 years ago).

Wow, from reading these post you'd think campgrounds and RV stops are hotbeds of thievery and crooks. I can honestly say I've never met anyone who has had someone enter their RV and steal some valuables while it was temporarily unoccupied. Not that it hasn't happened or that it can't happen, just that it sure is not common at all.

If you feel better having a safe and locking up your goodies, by all means do it, but IMO you're more apt to have an accident and get killed traveling to pick up your RV to go on vacation. ๐Ÿ™‚

My approach has been if it's out of sight it is out of mind. A safe is telling a thief that this has valuable items inside and worth prying out and hauling away. Pull a drawer and the space below it is good for truly important items like travel documents. I like the containers that look like a can of shaving cream for items like keys. I would not want a thief to do $1000 in damage ripping a $200 safe out to get to a few hundred dollars worth of stuff

Yep.. To me a safe screams steal me..
If you can see it. To steal mine, you better have torches, or be prepared to steal the whole coach. Not saying were it is at in the coach. This forum is way to open for the crooks! You can actually read the posts without registering!

Why do you need a safe if no one can see in your trailer?
