Towing Jeep with Mercedes 3500 BluTec Deisel

Has anyone had experience towing a Jeep Wrangler with their Mercedes 3500 BluTec RV and any advise or suggestions for doing it and using what towing equipment?

  • My 3500 is a Pleasureway Plateau TS with a hitch rating of 7,500lbs but I guess if the GVCWR is 15,000 lbs then my max toad would have to be 15,000 minus my fully loaded RV with liquids and passengers with cargo, ??11,000?? and as you point out that leaves @ 4,000 lbs to pull. I should tow 4,000 max. curb weight then.

    Thanks.
  • You didn't say what kind of RV you are pulling it with. What is the rating of the hitch? Some are #3500 and some are #5000. The Jeep can be around #4000. A 3500 Sprinter has a gross combined weight rating of about 15000 lbs with a gross weight of 11000. You will notice if you do the math that leaves you 4000 to tow. This means you will likely be right at the limit. That being said I know of a person on the Skinnie Winnie forum over on Yahoo that is pulling a Rubicon. LINK

Having said what others already have, my preference for towing equipment including braking and break-away as well, would be the READYBRUTE/ELITE and you might want to give TOWBARS UNLIMITED a call for a good price and further recommendations for your toad's base plate.
We're using a DEMCO on our Jeep and feel it's the best and at the best price for this particular vehicle.
  • I've towed a 3000 lb boat with a 2500 blutec MB, I'm not willing to say I did not know the boat was back there. but overall, from a performance stand point, It was fine. The van I ws driving is a cargo van, it weighs all of 5500 or so lbs, so probably under 10K total.

With a proper hitch, brakes working on the jeep etc, you should be ok overall. Just remember it will not do as my dmax will, being as IIRC the specs of the motor is int he 200/400 range. But the 5 sp trans is pretty good for finding the correct gear.

  • Primary suggestion: Weigh the Jeep, as it will be when being towed.
There is a good chance it is heavier than the rated capacity of the Mercedes or of the hitch.
If so, then you will have to decide if you are willing to tow it, even though it technically overloads your coach.
Many people have done so, mostly with success.
    Good luck.
