Using sani-con

We are told not to empty the black tank unless it is 2/3 full so that the liquid carries solids as the tank is dumped. I assume the rush of liquid does not occur with the sani con. Is the pumping action adequate to completely empty the black tank of solids?
  • Thanks all. Verified my thoughts...will use the sani con only when there is no alternative!

Anybody try the technique of keeping your black tank valve open after dumping with the Sani-Con, and then opening the gray valve to backflush into the black tank?

That was recommended by a Thetford engineer, and published in a paper at an FMCA session.

I don't have a Sani-Con, but a Flojet portable macerator is virtually the same. I do this all the time (run the black through, stop, leave the black tank valve open, open the grey, let the tanks equalize, close the grey, dump, repeat once more, then empty the grey completely, closing both valves.

I highly recommend a clear plastic sleeve so you have a headstart at turning the pump off. Running it dry will kill it in seconds.

  • We have a seasonal spot and use a Sani-Con. After I empty the the black tank I dump a 5 gallon bucket of water down the toilet then use the Sani Con again, doing this a couple of times cleans out the tank very well.
  • To answer your question,no, it does not do a good job of flushing out the tank. We normally use the 3 inch sewer hose, purchased a macerator for a summer workamping job that required us to pump our waste about 75 feet away. It worked good, however, when we left the smell coming from the tank was bad. It took us about 2 weeks of putting ice, oxyclean, dawn and whatever else to get it cleaned out. There was a layer of sludge on the bottom of the black tank from "no whoosh effect". We will use it again only when we have to and will never use it for 4 months again.

I use a flo-jet portable macerator when I have to.. Else I use the 3" hose, faster dump, not a problem to use it.
  • I use my black tank flusher when using the sanicon when getting close to empty. The sanicon cannot do its job if "stuff" stays in the tank. I know it is against the manuals but after finishing dumping, I leave the flusher on for a few moments to add back liquid to the back tank to reduce the possibility of TP or solids making pyramids or blocking the sensors. We have two baths. The half bath is right over the black tank and is a foot flusher (little water use) so we try to use that one for #1 business. The rear bath is a macerating electric throne which uses more water so we try to leave that one for #2 business. We can go longer before having to dump with this plan and have not had odor or other issues so far.
  • I would highly recommend an in tank flushing system.
