White leatherette

We are in the market for a new(er) RV and I see so many with white leatherette couches and chairs. I'm a camper, like in the woods camping and white just doesn't seem to be a great idea. How durable is it and how easy is it to clean? Is it prone to tear, I mean nothing looks worse than a leather anything with a tear
Thanks for your input.

Camping + kids + white leatherette = NO!!
  • Most are variant of "Ultra Leather" which is far more durable than leather and cleans very well.
If you can, take a ball point pen and mark a white spot under the chair & clean it to see how it goes.
I think you'll be surprised how durable this type leather is.

Leatherette comes in several weights so it's hard to know from sitting on it how well it'll keep up to a rigorous lifestyle. Perhaps a manufacturer can give you a swatch.

It does clean easily enough. A lil Fantastik/Lysol/name your fav cleaning spray should be fine with the exception of say ballpoint pen stains.

I don't think I'd want it in an RV from the perspiration and colour POV. Have a hard enough problem keeping my apt's empty nester off white couch clean, LOL.
  • That's the reason we didn't buy a Southwind. We loved the all tile floors but couldn't get past the (barely off) white leatherette furniture.
  • We have the off white leatherette in our Winnebago Aspect. It cleans up very nicely using Simple Green as recommended by Winnebago. My wife was impressed. It is actually better than real leather for the wear and comfort that an RV requires.
  • I believe they started harvesting Leatherettes when the Nauga went extinct and hence their hides disappeared from the market. Lets hope the poor white leatherettes fair better.

Yeah but one leatherette hide can upholster a whole motorhome. I think it is because of the huge rectangular shape of the hide.
