Why do I have sway with a WD hitch and sway kit?

You need about 420 lbs of tongue weight for a 3500 lb trailer.

Yes. It's all about balance, and your's is off. And once you get the correct amount of tongue weight. You will need to readjust the WDH. Remember. A weight distributing hitch. Has to have weight to distribute. No weight, and no weight is moved.

Well I'm loading everything I can toward the front of the trailer. What else can I do to increase the tongue weight? Add a battery or two?

Sounds like you have a couple problems potentially must importantly your tongue wieght. With a 3500 dry wieght trailer and assume at least 500# (your probably more) you need at least 500# of tongue wieght. Go a scale and get wieghed, figure out what your true tongue wieght is

- With 4000# plus of trailer you are pushing the limits of your vehicle so some of the problem maybe suspension
- Your vehicle probably has P metric passenger tires pushing thier limits. This will cause some tire side wall flex will feel like sway

Good luck but I suspect you fix the tongue wieght and WDH balance and it will improve greaterly

I assume the 219# is the brochure dry weight. Do you know what the loaded tongue weight is? And, do you know what the trailer's loaded total weight is? Without those numbers, we don't have much basis for speculating on why you're having sway problems.

So I'm looking at the tire pressures on my trailer. How would you set your pressures on a tandem axle setup?

I would set the pressure to the maximum stated on the tires.

I HOPE you don't have anything stuck on the trailer bumper such as bikes, racks etc...those are tail-waggers on small trailers.

I think you have two basic problems: short wheelbase vehicle AND way too light on the tongue. You can't do anything about the tug, of course, so you'll have to address the tongue weight somehow.

First thing I'd look at is coupler height- that should be dead level when hitched, or very slightly low. If it's high, you effectively lighten the tongue. Lowering it a bit below level has the opposite effect and might be worth trying if you can't beef things up by any other method.

Next, the load. It must be poorly distributed...move whatever you can ahead of or over the axles, and empty any tanks you have at the rear.

And as noted earlier, do make sure all tires are properly inflated...flab in that department certainly doesn't help!

You need to actually WEIGH it. Tongue weight needs to be 13% to 15% of ACTUAL MEASURED FULLY LOADED TT WEIGHT. No WDH will work properly until you do that.

Like others have said, "Get actual weights" first, then let people help with your score. They should be able to cut it in half without much effort.

Probably not true in this case.

I believe that trailer has the Al-Ko independent torsion axles.

If so, if it's high, you effectively increase the tongue weight. Lowering it a bit below level has the opposite effect.
