Teaching Hand Command Signs ....

First off, we're no where in the same universe as Mark. So lets not go there OK?

We've been doing two basic hand commands. One is here, and the other is stay.

Gave the Boy the stay command sign ....

The Kid gives me this look, then tells me, "I ain't talking to the HAND"!

Dang Kid's been watching that Terminator Movie Marathon, again!

Talk to the Hand ...

Talk to the Hand, again ...

  • My Doberman I had when the kids were little was an ex-K9. She was both sight and voice command. A terrific dog. She was a guardian of my children and the guardian of the house. Took her job very serious. We love her so much and she loved us.

  • This is good planning! Ike's hearing failed in his last years, and being able to call him back into the house via waving was super-helpful. He would glance back at me every 30 seconds or so, to see if I was signalling him.

Unfortunately, Jack the Cattle dog lost his hearing AND his eyesight - and tended to bite when startled.... that was just a bad situation all the way around....
  • Had a deaf Dalmatian that understood hand signals

Provided you could run fast enough to get in front of him so he could see the signals :B
  • Hand commands are great!!! Years ago I taught our new pup hand signals/signs to sit, speak, whisper, shake hands, lay, stay, dance and several other small signs. As time went on she became deaf and remained that way for several years. I was great to still be able to communicate with her and I'm sure it made her life better. Our dog now also knows many hand signs. It doesn't take much effort to teach them or at least the ones I've had.
