Search "gen-turi" in the forums for more info. The $134 store-bought one uses a plastic pipe after a metal elbow. Looks like the key factors are the elbow is like a conduit elbow--large radius, and the plastic pipe is larger than the conduit. The space between allows fresh air to be pulled in by the hot exhaust upflow. That dilutes the exhaust...and the heat.
