i just bought the new rv champion generator and ran it yesterday for a few min to test it out. It started up really easy. It kind of loud to me though. I don't think I would run it at a campsite unless the guy next to me has a loud one as well. I'll be testing it out all day at willow springs this weekend and let you guys know how it goes
All of the Chinese generators with the 6.5 HP Honda clone engine have a noise level of about 68 dB at 7 meters. I have measured quite a few and find this reading to be consistent.
The Honda 3000EU, 2000EU and Kipor inverter units are considerably quiter at around 60dB. When we compare the Chinese units to them the Chinese units appear quite loud. But, when we compare the Chinese units to standard Honda generators like the 3000EB the noise level is almost identical. Contractor or general purpose units like the Coleman, Generac, NorthStar, DeWalt and many others are considerably louder (sometimes by over 15 dB) than the Chinese units using the Honda GX160 or GX200 engine clone in the same power class (2,500 to 3,500 watts with 5.5 to 6.5 HP engines) - this is true even for the commercial units using the alternate style Honda GC160 engine which is generally a little quiter than similar Briggs, Robin, Tecumseh and Kohler engines.
The noise level of the Chinese units meets NPS standards for a generator. But, as we know, that does not keep them from being objectionable to a quite loving neighbor.
Ironically, most of the noise comes from the mechanical assembly, not the exhaust. Simple vented enclosures made out of MDF (Medimum Density Fiberboard) or fiberglass matted drop-in 2' x 4' ceiling pannels can make a considerable difference in noise levels. The later are light, easy to cut and carry and can be assembled with duct tape on site. I have done some experimentation with such enclosures and have had considerable success by removing the muffler and through the use of an extension pipe with a attachment flange and support welded on, locating the muffler outside of the box where the generator resides. Getting rid of the muffler heat inside the box makes a big difference with what you can do to shield noise!
