Come to think of it, I did something similar last fall (ran our house as best as possible with my dirt-cheap 1000W chinese genny) and the UPS was online (but not in inverter mode) the whole time with *zero* problems. We sat in our living room watching TV and surfing the net while the rest of the neighborhood was sitting in the dark.
The UPS in question is an APC as well, and it had no issues whatsoever.
