5.5HGJAB-1038A Onan Generator

If I turn on both circuit breakers on my generator, it shuts down. I can run one of the circuits but the other circuit shuts it down. Something is wrong with the one circuit. If I turn only this circuit on it shuts the generator down. This is with NO load.

Is this a circuit breaker problem or bigger and deeper. All circuits work find when motor-home is plugged into 50 amp, everything works fine, so no internal circuit issues.

If circuit breaker on this one leg is on, the generator starts for just a couple of seconds and shuts down.
  • I would bet, the 120 wires FROM the APU going to your Transfer box are shorted on the hot wire for THAT breaker that trips. You need to find the junction box that is close to the APU where the 120 wiring for the APU comes to and check it. I will also bet, it is a metal box and the wire nut for THAT wire has melted or come loose and the wire is shorting out. IF the issue was AT or internal to the APU, it would die regardless of the breaker on or off. Turning the breaker ON just lets the downstream short get to the APU. Doug
  • I agree with doug. Most common thing is a shorted wire. I see that a lot on horse trailers.
