Atwood Furnace Doesn't Stay On

Warranty was up a couple of weeks ago on my furnace, so guess what I noticed today when I was up to do other jobs...

It's an Atwood 8525-IV.

The owner's manual does not have much really to help isolate the problem although it does have a schematic. This is the first time I've ever had a problem with a furnace, hoping for suggestions from those with experience.

Symptoms are:

Blower comes on and it seem to ignite immediately. It seems to burn poorly (smells like half burned outside and the normal 'roar' sound is more like a cough mixed with a roar. It turns off quickly and consistently after about 3-4 seconds. It tries this 3 times, then gives up and turns itself off.

There is a maintenance LED flash code, "Ignition Lockout Fault - 3 flashes with 3-second pause"

It was working well 2 weeks ago, it's been sitting since. There is lots of propane and full voltage at the control board. I checked for critters in the flue, at least as far as I can see nothing. I wiggled all the visible connectors too, one seemed a bit corroded so I cleaned that up.

The only thing I could see suspicious was it was wet on the floor of the outer compartment where the rain came in the flue hole, but the electronics and stuff seems dry and the outer compartment appears sealed well (metal is sealed at the bottom) so I don't think any got inside (it would be a bit of a rat's nest to get things apart to really confirm nothing got in).

As the obvious thing that has changed since it worked was the rain (a lot of rain and with a decent wind) I'm thinking moisture is the first culprit to check more for but given it all seems to work except the there is something wrong with the flame where could moisture have gotten in? Is there a sight hole somewhere to see the flame quality to confirm that is the issue before I start digging into the electronics?
Are there proper service manuals available online? Any other ideas what specifically to check?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks! it looks like the correct one and it seems to be full of the kind of details I need to track this down.
  • If you don't have a bug screen on the furnace you may have dirt dobbers or spider webs in the flame chamber. I've seen that numerous times with your symptoms.

Let us know what you end up finding.

There is no bug screen visable as far as I could see, I was surprised at how open it was to 'critters' when I pulled the pipe out. I'll have a look, thanks.

Does your stove top burners burn clean with nice blue flame. If so this tells you your propane is good and working properly (no air leaks etc)

While you are looking around inside the unit make sure the SAIL SWITCH is working freely... This is apparently working since it does fire the furnaces. The sail switch is a safety feature that will shut down your furnace if the blower fan quits. Debris gets into the sail switches all the time since they are close to the floor opening...

Not sure what the presence of water has done for you... I would think all would work just fine if the controller board is not under water. My propane burner in my COLEMAN ROAD TRIP grill works under all kinds of presence of water being there is a water reservoir just under the propane burner to catch the grease dripping from the grill...

My first thoughts was the SAIL SWITCH action when I first read your post but you say it always starts up - just doesn't burn at its full roaring force and then faults out... Perhaps the round heat fins on the outside of the heater is full of debris from wasps etc...

Exact same issue I had on my furnace 3 months ago. Checked and cleaned everything but no go. Stove worked fine. Finally removed the burner and found a dirt dauber nest on the end. We are now traveling and have used the heater for 10 days with no issue.

Well the answer is ... I removed the burner looking for critters, but I found this rusty burner. Enough rust that a good portion of the burner holes are plugged solid and that seems to fit the symptoms and I guess I can clean this up or get a new one ... BUT.
I can't really see much inside, without taking a lot more apart than I have, but where would all that moisture come from? It was a couple of weeks of a lot of heavy rain that proceeded the problem, and the box on the outside was very wet (but the silicone sealant seemed to all be intact so I don't think it got inside.\. The chimney seems normal, so it should not be getting in that way.
The moisture seems to have puddled at the bottom, so I guess it could have come through the propane - but that much water should have played havoc with all the other propane appliances and they all work fine.
    Any ideas?
