Awning woes saging cover? Tension or shot cover?

So my awning apparently ripped apart where it connects to the metal cover/shield on both ends. It poured rain and the **** thing filled up like a waterbed! Big surprise when I pulled the handle to shorten strut! Thought it was trying to kill me. I poked a hole and drained it. I can fix with awning tape, I guess.
Worse yet, My awning was winding up crooked. I pulled a leg off the coach and pulled it out a couple of feet past tube to prop up and get some slack. That worked fine. Unfortunately, now my metal cover/shield is sagging and I had to push it up with a broom to get it up so awning could roll under. Still, the awning did not roll up all the way tightly, like it should.
So, what did I screw up? Can I tighten it, and will that fix cover/shield problem? Or should I break out a few hundred and get a new awning? This one looks fine, except the sun damage where it shows at shield/cover.
