CHEAPOWATT Hey Landyacht

Mine are destined as 25-amp 13.2 volt super dooper floaters...

But I opened up the first of many I own and nearly gagged.

Details later questions first por favor...

When yours was under the lash had you touched the guts first?
Heatsink compound, yadda?

How hot did the port and rear side get? Did it buzz first then get hot or start buzzing right away with voltages of 15.0 and amperage above 25? Or did you goose it and ot heated up then start buzzing?

Don't want to invest anything into these critters if your unit screeched while it was cool. But being whipped like a red headed stepchild.

13.2 is not a lot of voltage. But try to dump 13.2 into a depleted AGM and the world can turn downside up.

Not a SHRED of heatsink compound on the bi polar thermal pads nor any on the thick aluminum blocks that screw to the case. IF IF IF IF your unit heated up before blowing snot this will help me decide. The heatsinks for the Megawatts are being heliarced as I write this. I'll slap some ugly sinking on the Cheapos after they get oozed with thermal compound. Your answer will tell me how far not to go --
  • Ooooooo. Well if it mimics the soundtrack of "Day Of The Triffids" when set at 13.2 and eats itself TS. It's sitting on a concrete slab. Thanks for the head's-Down (shrapnel).
  • I had opened mine up, flattened the aluminum heatsinks with a file and spooged on the thermal grease. I'd also put a 60x15MM wart on the outside of the case.

It still buzzed over 36 amps, and after saying 'Eff' it, I set it to 14.7v unloaded, and plugged it into a depleted battery.

Smoke and sparks at 17 minutes of buzzing.

My cheapowatt had ~90% thermal grease coverage between aluminum plate and casing, also on the thermal pad.

It blew after given some spit and polish with better heatsinking and increased airflow.
