"Why does my 2017 Ford V-10 check engine light stay on?"

Here's a few fault codes to get an idea what the problem "could" be. (for experts only) Not all codes apply to every vehicle nor is it a complete list.

100% correct. I don't know how posts I have seen where it was suggested the problem was an oxygen sensor. There are numerous other things that can turn the light on. There is little magic in reading the code and it will only point a good technician in the right direction to perform further diagnostics.

I know for a fact that long standing error codes are given a hard time by the factory. There was a case in San Diego, which went to litigation and the owner partially lost which was his dime not Volkswagen's.

Dealerships have portable storage devices that store codes, can plug into a large diagnostic machine and this means the rig does not have to plug itself into a service bay.

D216 code. May be interpolated by a series of Technical Service Bulletins that not only lead to "the fix" but ancillary parts replacements within warranty that parts houses cannot lay their hands on.

This is like having a pineapple faced teenager at Wal-Mart try to diagnose an alternator problem that actually lies in the chassis harness and not in the alternator at all. And you pay full bore for the fumble.

I got a gas cap code (vacuum fuel system leak very small) at least once a year and was unable to clear it unless I slightly greased the sealing ring on the cap. This year the grease didnโ€™t work so I bought a new cap for $17. Once I got a code indicating coolant temperature was too low. Early warning that the thermostat needed to be replaced. I paid $60 for my code reader and code clearing device, well worth the money. Look for one that gives an explanation rather than just a code number.

If it would not fit into the ORilley's or Auto Zone lot locally, it would be one BIG UN. :W

I can vouch for the Ford reader to be more comprehensive than the Auto Whatever ones. My Previous Ford had a red light on and the reader showed nothing. Turned out something was amiss with the alternator.

hope you have a truck center close like me. However it would seem that any Ford Stealer worth his salt could do it since the V10 is still alive and well and had been for years prior to the 6.2 in 2011. Give then a call.

The DW and I have a reader from HFT in our DDs and one in the MoHo. Wife insisted we get one for each of our daughters and grandkids.

The only fault I'v had so far is the gas cap error. I automatically check the cap before I get the reader if I get a code.

Since your vehicle is a 2017, it is most likely still under factory warranty. If so, the best thing you could do is take it to an authorized Ford truck dealer and ask their service writer your above referenced question. Let Ford tell you what is wrong on their dime. Their diagnostic machine is MUCH MORE comprehensive than anything Autozone, Walmart, etc. has. Further, if/when Ford looks at your vehicle, a record will be made of the fault code search and subsequent repair, if any. That way, if you have any recurring issues AFTER the warranty expires, you have a good argument, and a written record, that an authorized Ford dealer attempted repairs and they relapsed.

Or, do it another way and open yourself to the blame game, which you will most likely lose. Your choice. Good luck. Please write back when the issue is solved.

^^^^THIS^^^^

Not only is a 2017 it still in warranty, it NEEDS FIXED before you end up causing extremely expensive emissions repairs. Unburnt or raw fuel caused by a non firing cylinder can and will poison the O2 sensors and even damage the cat converters.

Your check engine light (CEL) will light up when the engine misfires (fuel/spark), detects faults like O2 sensors, cat converter issues and even something as simple as not fully sealing the gas tank cap..

You DID make sure you have followed the correct procedure for tightening the gas cap?

Some you must turn until you hear two or three clicks.

In fact, if you have the "capless" gas cap thing, you may have a defective fuel tank filler.. Capless gas fillers are notorious for not sealing and can throw a CEL.

By the way, emissions system related CELs should also be covered up to 50K miles and 5 years or less old..

According to HERE

It would be stupid to continue to own and drive a 1 yr old vehicle and ignore and drive with a CEL light all the wile it is under factory warranty.

Take it to your local Ford dealer, if they are no able to accommodate a Motor Home, they should be able to at least find the nearest Ford TRUCK SHOP.

A $10 bluetooth OBD2 scanner + Android cellphone/tablet + "Torque" App = a scanner good enough for reading/clearing most codes.

The check engine light means that something is wrong. Buy a code reader or find someplace that will read it for you. It could be a simple fix or a costly one, but get it checked out. Or electrical tape over the light.
