Dash A/C oil

I just replaced my compressor and dryer on my '92 Winnie. I also completely disassembled the entire system and washed out all of the lines and replaced the o-rings. The big question is "how much oil does the system take"? The system is a converted R12 system. The conversion was done by the previous owner and I have owned it for 10 years so I'm guessing it was done right.

  • If you opened the system and flushed the condenser then you probably lost oil in the vented gas. You should pull and drain the compressor, then refill. I agree with birdchaser. Ester oil is best for a conversion. I upgraded my whole system to a new Nippondenso 6P compressor, so it was empty. The 6P needs 7 oz. total of Ester oil. Once it was all ready, I put 1/2 the oil into the compressor and 1/2 into the receiver/drier. I used R12A, so there was no need to vacuum. I did anyway to confirm it was sealed, but released the vacuum before filling. The conversion works awesome.

  • It is recommended that Esther be used on conversions. 20 min of vacuum is plenty to purge the system of air and moisture. Accumulators need only be changed if there is metal contamination. There is a filter on orifice tubes that catches all contaminants and it is recommended it be replaced whenever the system is opened up.
  • Assuming you mean it is now 134a, then get some PAG 100 oil.

You need to replace either the receiver drier or accumulator. Check clean or replace the orifice tube if a CCOT system.

Pump the system down for at least 1 hour, then close valves and it must hold vac for at least 30 min with no rise in pressure.

Remember to purge lines of air with Freon before opening valves.
  • Not all compressor ship with oil, and they usually overfill the oil. You should use Esther oil which is compatible with the seals in the system. I would only add about 4 to 5 ounces os oil. If you replaced the compressor you should also replace the orofice tube or expansion valve, whichever your syst comes with. Make sure to pull about 24" of vac. For about 12 min. Before charging the system. Good luck!
  • The compressor HAS the required amount of oil. There is a reservoir in a Compressor that should have been filled to the required level by the compressor supplier. You do NOT just add an oil charge to an AC system. Too much oil will cause problems. Doug

Please reply with Make, Year, Model, and Engine Size. I have a book that might help.
