DIMPLEX ELECTRIC FIREPLACE PROBLEMS

My BF8000ST dimplex heater shorted out. I smelled electric burning and the flame started flashing on and off and the smell got worse so i unplugged it....anyone had such problems? if so, let me know. It could have burnt my 5er down if i was outside.
  • A little heads up on the results of our experience to this problem.

I just finished with dimplex tech help. The warranty is 2 years for the original element that came installed in your rv. After that 2 years, applies to me since we purchased a few months over the 2 year period, they will send you a new heating element assembly for $115 + $30 shipping. And for that $145 you get no warranty at all. This comes with a touch of caution since we were sitting around the fire the other night with people we have met over the years and several with that same unit have had this same issue, one of those is on the 3rd element and thought the warranty was for 3 years and advised me to call.

We were looking around for a new unit and noticed that dimplex is no longer installed in the Landmark models we looked at.
  • Oh, second one and this time instead a thermostat that will not work when it gets cold, this one now is just on or off manually....and the flames quit.....just a big square box that blows hot air and has to be shut off when the rig gets to hot, and then back on when it's to cold....
  • As long as the current being used ( your heater) or a bad connection does not exceed the rating of the curcuit breaker, it will not trip. And they may not trip right away if they are overloaded. It may be overloaded by 20% or more before it trips. They usually trip instantanly only on a short. Hot and neutral together. For novices they call everything a SHORT. I've seen a lot of damage from burnt connections (usually the kind where the wire gets plugged into the outlet) and the breaker didn"t trip. No need to, it wasn"t overloaded. Be Safe check your plugs and outlets during use for heat.
  • My Dimplex BF8000ST had a heater element go out after about a year. Probably only was operated a total of maybe 100 hours or so. Warranty covered (Oct/Nov 2011 approx).

Now about a year later, same thing happened again.

I'd LOVE to find out if they are good folks to work with, but has anyone tried their number on the dimplex.com contact page? I get "you didn't dial the number correctly for customer service" and then I get the perpetual busy signal for the tech support. I tried on Jan 2, and then today Jan 3.

We LOVE the electric fireplace - silly yes, but what can I say. But we're not convinced they are a high quality device, yet.

  • Hey all. I tore into the fireplace after checking the price of a new one ans was amazed at how simple they are. Don't be afread of opening them up. its almost funny how simple they are. My problem was a socket shorted outwhere the light bulb was. Not rocket science. saved 500.00 dollars and spent 5.00..i do wonder why the breaker didn't flip. thanks guys and gals.
  • Call Dimplex, they are good folks to work with. They may even send you replacement Parts n /c

I would think the 120VAC circuit breaker in your power center would have tripped for it. Those kind of electric heaters sure draw alot of power to operate. They are neat to watch however...

I suspect the electric heater section has overloaded some wiring inside the dimplex heater which will need replaced. The flame display section is nothing more than a rotating drum with a light bulb in it so no heat involved around the flame display. We have another name brand here and it draws too much power with the heater on and trips breaker so we just use it for display only. Keeps us warm and snug hehe (Mind over matter I guess)...

Hopefully you can pull your unit out and inspect the wiring inside of it.
