DSI-FLT Light

I know this is a fault indicator associated with gas firing of the water heater. Now that’s out of the way, let me explain what’s happening. Regardless of whether I turn on the “electric” or “gas” switch, the heater will heat the water without failure and as soon as it’s hot (seems hotter than it should be) the light comes on. At this point, it doesn’t matter if I use the water to a point where it should be heating again, it will not heat until I turn it off, let it stay off until the water cools and then turn it back on. I’ve tried every variation!! So, I’m forced to turn it on 1/2 hour before needed and then turn switch off after it heats. One point is that the tstat was replaced last year, but this has just shown up. Too me, it screams that the tstat is not functioning properly and shutting off, when it reach proper temp and this is providing secondary safety. Before I replace the tstat, wanted to here from the wide world of RVr’s. Appreciate anything that can be offered.
  • The tstat is 140 degrees. The ECO is 180. IF the tstat fails and then the ECO trips, it will turn the Red LED fault light on when on 120 volts. So, either they used the wrong tstat when they replace it or they installed a ECO in place of the Tstat. Last, if the Tstat spring is not installed correctly, this causes the Tstat to not TOUCH the aluminum tank and not sense the actual temp. Usually when the ECO temp is reached the POP OFF Valve will start to seep. Doug

PS. you just joined. ALWAYS post Year/Brand/Model of RV and Brand/Model of appliance. This gets the best help.
  • Thanks. As I referenced, this happens regardless of whether operating electric or gas. In fact I usually don’t ever operate on gas anyway. It is an Atwood.

Suburban or Atwood (I'm guessing Suburban)

    Why?
Atwood uses one control board and two (Main/Safety or ECO) thermostats and if the ECO opens the FAULT light comes on

Suburban uses two independent control systems. Each one has an ECO.

I'm guessing the main Gas T-Stat is not opening when it should causing the water to get a tad extra hot (This by the way is easy to test) and opening the ECO. either than or the ECO is opening too fast. or somebody switched 'em up.

    How to test
    Heat water
Stick a meat or candy thermometer in a styrafoam cup and fill with hot water. Let it overflow for a bit. Read temp of water 120 is normal 160 is HOT. 180 should open the ECO.
