Electrical issues, fifth wheel

Hi there,

Female, electrically challenged, please bare with me...

2006 mountaineer. Hooked to house power. Batteries will not charge so use external battery charger. Have done this for a long time. Now batteries will not hold a charge so will replace.

Refrigerator will work only on propane.

Some lights will not come on at all.

I am thinking we have a bad converter.

How do I test the converter? Is it located behind my panel? Can I take it out and take it somewhere to test?

Thanks for any help!

Fuse . Refers require 12 volts to the control board. There is a fuse on the board and a fuse on the main panel. Either could be bad. Start by checking for 12 volts at the board and work from there.

I would look at fuses also. Refrigerator and AC only need 12V in the control circuits but all (OK, most) 12V circuits are protected by fuses, not the circuit breakers. Since your trailer is relatively new, it may have the 12V board where a little light lights up to show blown fuses.

  • Great schematic!!

Lights are bright inside rv so batteries are working.

Ac and fridge were working before disconnected old batteries. Fridge was only working on propane, not electric setting.

    No neither will turn on.

    Flipped all breakers

Replaced batteries and nothing works.......cables reversed??
If you hooked up the new battery cables reversed you probably blew the 'reverse polarity' fuses located on converter (large 30A or bigger fuses---2)

Converter could be faulty, reverse polarity fuses blown, battery disconnect switch OFF.......any/all could be your problem(s)
  • Ok, new problem. Removed old batteries but forgot to turn off refrig that was on propane. Nit won't turn back on even with new batteries. Nor will ac work
  • Flipped all the circuit breakers off then back on.

Going to replace the two batteries now and then see what we have. Will do voltage test then.

    Thanks!!!
  • You also need to check the 12 volt fuses using the same volt meter set ot ohms reading. Then set to AC reading check the 120 VAC after each breaker to be sure you have power there.
  • The converter is part of the mix somewhere. Yes, the converter is frequently behind the circuit breaker / fuse panel. Perhaps start with the circuit breaker for the converter, is it tripped?

Refrigerator and light problems could be a result of no 12V power, i.e. bad converter, low batteries.

Comment about some lights not working is puzzleing. If it is a battery problem all 12V lights will have the same problem.

If you have a voltmeter there is a simple way to check the converter. With house current disconnected measure battery voltage across terminals. Probably around 12.0 to 12.6 volts. Plug in the shore power. Voltage across batteries should be higher, maybe in the neighborhood of 13.8 volts. No increase, your converter isn't working.

Simple voltage meters are around $10 at Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
