Hose between propane tank and regulator?

This may be a dumb question, but can I have any hose between my propane tank and the regulator?

My propane compartment is a little tight for hooking up a two stage regulator. If I could have a foot or so of hose (so the regulator doesn't hook right into the tank valve) it'd work.

It seems like that's what a pigtail does although I might be misunderstanding (I only have one propane tank, if that matters).

The guy at the propane shop said I'd need expensive high pressure hose (over $100 for 3 ft). Pigtails are $10, but I don't know if they're beefy enough.

Thank you.
  • A commercially produced pigtail has a built in check valve that stops the flow of propane in the event of a break in the line. These are manufactured for the purpose you need. Go to your nearest RV parts place or propane store and buy what you need, install it, and go camping while feeling safe about your LP system. I found up to 60" pigtails in the catalog and they were less than $20. One end has the proper connection to attach to the bottle, the other end has 1/4" threaded connector to screw into the regulator. The safety of yourself and those around you is worth more the anxiety of wondering because you tried to save a couple of buck by cobbling something together. Problem solved.
  • Thanks again all. I just went to the shop, and maybe he was confused when we talked on the phone yesterday...

He showed me probably the same 350 psi hose for much cheaper than the $100 hose and said I could use it as a pigtail. He also mentioned a limiting device or something similar if I wanted to add an extra later of protection (I forgot what it's really called, but I think it keeps gas from coming out of the tank at full pressure before it gets to any hoses).

I think the guy is honest, I just think he or I was confused yesterday.
  • I just went down to the local rv dealer and got a 350# pressure hose and an adapter. About 2 foot long.$13.99 now I can get the tank in and out easyly and can use a 20# tank if I have to. The rating is moulded right into the hose. a hose for after the regulator was around $8 and only rated #10

The best thing to use is a product that is designed to do the intended job and that use the appropriate hose and fittings properly connected. I've read post by people "rigging" propane systems with various hoses and clamps, but if you have ever seen the results of a propane fire or explosion, you might look at it a little differently.
  • You need this one- rated for 350 psi, made for the job. There are different end fittings on them- to go direct to the single regulator you need a 1/4 MPT thread (the other more common is 1/4" inverted flair). Use either approved pipe dope or yellow teflon tape made for LP.
Any RV place should have tons in stock, FWIW.
  • Thank you. It seemed like any of those pigtails on Amazon would do what I want.

The Mr. Heater one says it's good up to 210 psi. Since the propane is just for running our furnace, we won't even have the tank open when it's hot out (and supposedly that's when tanks get near 200 psi).

If I'm understanding correctly, I guess the risk is that unregulated high pressure could break a hose, and maybe MexicoWanderer's suggestion is for a hose that's even less likely to break.

    Thanks again.

  • Pigtails are easily available up to 6 feet. Common sizes are 12,15,20,24,30,26, and 48" They are high pressure- 350 psi working pressure. $100 for 3 feet is robbery.
